Going for mine on Tuesday as I feel I've been lucky not getting caught the last 9 years!
Any handy hints and tips to appease the testers?. |

If the trailer starts to go the wrong way, don't rush to try and correct it, stop pull forward and calmly go again |

Does that mean that you can be done for towing a trailer or caravan if you have never taken a test? Are there different categories of trailer? _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

If you passed your driving test before some time in 97 you can drive with a trailer I think.

Have you been told the process of the test and what you need to do?
It's similar to the hgv but without the medical.
I have a copy of what you need to do which i can dig out if you need to know.
Apparently most peopke fail on the reversing at the test centre before even going on the road |

If you passed your car driving test on or after 1 January 1997 and you now want to tow a caravan or certain trailers, you may have to take a specific practical test.
Car licences obtained before 1 January 1997
If you passed a car test before 1 January 1997 you keep your existing entitlement to tow trailers until your licence expires. This means you're generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes maximum authorised mass (MAM). You also have entitlement to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750 kgs MAM.
Car licences obtained on or after 1 January 1997
If you passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 you're limited to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass towing a trailer up to 750 kgs, or a vehicle and trailer combination up to 3.5 tonnes MAM providing the MAM of the trailer doesn't exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle. You'll need to pass an additional driving test in B+E if you wish to tow a caravan or trailer combination which exceeds these weight limits.
The car and trailer practical driving test
The car and trailer test (B+E) is based on the lorry driving test and lasts for approximately one hour. Please note that B+E tests are conducted at vocational (bus and lorry) driving test centres.
The towing test (B+E) includes vehicle safety questions, an off-road reverse manoeuvre, a controlled stop, uncoupling and coupling of the trailer and driving on the road.
You won't be expected to carry out the following exercises:
•emergency stop on the public road
•reversing round a corner
•reverse parking
•turning in the road |

Phew! Thanks for that, guys, I passed my test in 1974, and have been towing trailers and caravans off and on ever since. Should have checked my licence, but I now need my extra-strong glasses to read the small print! _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

I think the thing to check nowadays is that your photo licence is still in date as they only last for 10 years and its easily forgotten.. |

Do they not send out reminders? Mine runs out in 2016, I checked! Thanks, Albideli. _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

no they don't send out reminders, which they should for the money they get off us for renewals, but they're pretty quick with the fines if you get stopped with an expired one.. |

At least the old paper ones are still valid. _________________

Your only allowed to do this once in the reversing manouvre in the test. Your trailer has to then be within a certain distance of the end of the 'garage' without touching the sides. (usually all marked out by cones) |
