|

okay so my Shogun SWB V6 has gone and I bought a car a year ago.
I have a car and a trailer and frankly I miss off-roading or even just going down green lanes.
Therefore I needed a vehicle to solution for:
Family
Camping
Off-roading
And transporting my drum kit.
Delica!!!! Perfect solution.
So why don't we have a modern version in the country?
The only thing I've seen close is the Bongo 4x4
Now I do about 10,000 miles per year as I catch the train to work and my wife takes the car so it'll travel 10ish miles per day.
My Mazda 6 diesel really doesn't like the short journeys.
The later facelift L400 ads say nearly 30mpg? Really?
The V6 is 25ish mpg I understand and petrol is 8p/l cheaper at my local petrol station.
I had the Facelift shogun 1998-2000 and it had a 24v V6. Is this the same unit? It cost me £2000 to have LPG conversion removing the old fuel tank to put the gas bottle in and a small race tank in front of the rear axle for fuel.
What are your experiences regards maintanance charges diesel vs petrol?
Any thoughts, ideas comment welcome. |

realistically, any of the 4x4's of this age/size are going to be returning the same mpg, the lpg cost isn't going to be recouped on your mileage, diesel is far easier to maintain and work on, isn't really a coarse engine but not quite as smooth as the petrol, depends on your budget but theres some very low mileage fresh imports appearing again some are only 50kish (although worth getting this verified obviously) the facelift does have the electronic fuel pump which some say is a pain but I believe thats only down to fuel shops not having the equipment to work/test them but I've not heard of that many going wrong compared to how many are in use (you always hear about the bad ones never the good). But agreed the Delica is pretty unique and theres not much that can do everything that the Delica can do, Basic easy to maintain motor... |

I think I'm going to go for the diesel and look at the veg oil options. |

Go wash your mouth out with Carbolic soap. :D
The Bongo may look like a Deli, for the 'Wannabee's', but doesn't have the ability.
The 'modern' replacement for the L400 is the Delica D:5, of which only one has a UK number plate.
It was modded for the Dakkar Rally, as a support vehicle.
In time they will appear in the UK as Grey imports, but no doubt the prices will be very high. _________________

The D:5 can now be bought at auction in Japan so you could get one it will just take a while to get here.
It may also cost a small fortune to complete the necessary tests. _________________

here is a modded D5, i like this one although prefer the look of an L400
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFh3hyppbXM
don't think they are as capable as the L400 off road i guess it depends on how much off roading you want to do ...
oh and i think they have now put a diesel engine in them too. _________________ Always remember when you read my replies I know less than Bazza. |

or if you have loads of money could buy a vw synchro...although still doesn't have the style of a Deli in my opinion
and you could buy at least 15 delis for the price of this one

I posted this on Facebook a while ago, I'll put it here too.
This makes me want a D:5 but I'd really like to know more about their off road abilities first. Clearance is supposed to be 80mm higher than a stock Deli and they have independent suspension which should be an improvement. _________________

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffWdtdalN4A
would like to see a video of an L400 and a D5 doing the same terrain. _________________ Always remember when you read my replies I know less than Bazza. |

I think an L400 that had a similar lift would do all of that, maybe even a bit better. _________________

I reckon you could get a stock one on the road in the UK for around £30K now. That's a fair bit more than an L400.
Imagine what your L400 or L300 would be like if you spent 30K on it. _________________

Hello I did say close
Very sorry
It's looking like a Diesel and I'm interested in this bio diesel veg oil stuff.
TBO reading that section of the forum sent my head in a spin...
As far as I can tell the only option for putting straight into the normal tank is bio diesel.
SVO can't be put into the tank you need a twin tank setup or a secondary tank.
If you use SVO you need to thin it. Some say with diesel others say petrol????
I had a quick look in my local area Sheffield and bio diesel is sold for £1.28/l
I had a quick look on fleabay for a home kit and it looks like it would cost ££££ to setup.
Has anyone put a different Diesel engine in? 3.0l Isuzu? V6 diesel sounds nice. |

Hmmmm.
Lot of good things about the D:5 but there's no option for a diesel and they don't do a long wheelbase version. _________________ 1996 PE8W, 1994 PF8W*2, Gilera Fuoco, and a Smart Electric Drive. |

okay as far as i understand it,for the L400 pre facelift model 2.8 diesel you can put the veg oil straight into the tank and mix with diesel and it runs just fine, the percentage of diesel to veg oil changes depending on winter or summer, problems can occur with the fuel filter blocking at first and also the fuel pump oil seal may need changing, but they do anyway! apart form that they seem to run just fine...
also Lee of tigweld was working on system using the existing tank and a pre heater , the idea is the tank is divided one part for diesel one part for veg oil, start and finish the journey on diesel but do the main part of the journey running on veg oil and all done from a flick of a switch inside the cab. excellent idea :D
a few people have been running on veg oil for a while and there are lots of info and threads on here about it. _________________ Always remember when you read my replies I know less than Bazza. |

The L400 will run just fine on 100% SVO but SVO starts to gel when the weather cools down so you either need to heat it up before it gets to the filter or mix it with diesel.
It will also run on WVO but you need to filter that a fair bit, the equipment to do that isn't too expensive, it's just getting a bit tricky to find sources for the WVO. _________________

As our Delicas get older and less reliable the D 5 is the only option. But only if they get imported into the uk. :? |
