Bought my self a cheap rig of eBay,manage to get a midland 38 2 mics and 2 swr metres and ext speaker for £20 ,just waiting on my stinger and mount to come. If I mount it on the bullbar do I need to rub some paint off to earth the mount or don't it matter'?

You won't get a particularly good SWR or signal with the twig mounted on the Bull Bar. It'll be alright if you're in a tight convoy but as soon as you spread apart you'll lose reception...

The aerial arrived today but instead of the 90cm one they have sent me a 1.55m one, would it seriously affect the swr if I cut it down?

Yes the wound core inside the loading section won't have enough length to compensate.

The mount needs to be well earthed, preferably to the bullbar, and the bar should have a decent connection to the body, if not then yes, a separate earth bond wouldn't go amiss.
