Bumped into an old friend last night and she has bought a Delica 400.
She, like us all , loves her Deli and needs it as she lives out in the boonies.
However she says it changes up okay, about 45 to 50mph, which she is happy with but when going to visit her daughter on the motorway, say about 60'ish it will drop into 3rd, then back up into 4th, it will hunt gears for quite a while until settling down then repeat the hunting again.

She took it to a Automatic g/box "specialist" who said the box was okay.
When they test drove it they couldn;t get it to hunt the gears, a few days after it returned to hunting gears.

Could this be the overdrive switch playing up ?
or
Throttle Position Sensor playing up ??

She is going to pop round one evening next week so I can have a drive and see what exactly happends & she can have a drive in mine to compare...

idea's / thoughts anyone ??

could be the track in the tps is worn and only showing when the engine is warmed up,or it could be old oil?

Andyj - long time no speak - hope things are going okay ??

I was thinking about how old the oil may be, she is going to check her receipt & see if the specialist replaced the oil.
If not we may replace the oil to be on the safe side.
She is keen to keep the Deli going as she loves it & it is perfect for her location.

Is the tps easily stripped & cleaned (I have done glow plug solenoids several times but I assume the tps is more difficult).  Are there any photos & strip downs around ?? I have adjusted the tps before but never stripped one to clean it.
I remember ages ago some one posted a way of replacing the Mitsi tps with an off the shelf pot ?? (or was it my imagination ??).

Next time she goes on the motorway and it starts hunting, get her to turn the heating on max, and full fan.

If the gearbox goes back to normal after a couple of minutes, then put the heating on cold, and within a couple of minutes it starts hunting again, it will be the engine heat sensor, that tells the gearbox it is up to heat and that the overdrive can be switched on.

The sensor can go wrong, especially when the engine gets hot at motorway speed.

This happened on mine and it fixed it.

The TPS sensor can also give the same symptoms, though the heater test will not change the behavior.
I think there is also a speedo sensor that can play up, again not affected by the heater test.

thats a good tip there gnome.

yes noisey long time no see mate! delis fine after blowing the head which was fixed by mr v8rick and its better than ever.

you can clean the tps with some electrical cleaner or even brake cleaner, you Can't take it apart far as i know,so i just sprayed some cleaner in the pot and twisted it a few times,it was a lot smoother afterwards so it did something!

PostPosted: Thu May 02, 2013 14:24    Post subject: HELP !! TPS possibly - car won't start - AT ALL..... Reply with quote

Hi
In a previous topic I met a friend with Delica that had start issues + dropping out of gear issues.
She has just popped by and this is what I did:
1) removed intercooler & glow plug bus bar - checked all glow plugs, replaced bus bar.
2) whilst intercooler off, loosened TPS and rotated anti-clockwise (did not remove any screws)
3) replaced intercooler.

Now it won't start - when you turn the key, lights momenterily go on, the glow plug solinoid clicks then it all goes off - in less than 1 sec.

I have checked for loose wires - checked sensor conenctions - all are okay.

Please - I must have taken intercooler off 100 times and never had this issue - any help

It is in park when we try to start..

OMG   .....Stand down every one....

I noticed it had an alarm on it...

Batty woman says " what if I close all the doors lock it & then re-open doors, will it then start ??"
I said " don't be daft"

So she locks it and it gives a triple beep......

"It hasnever done that before...."

So the alarm must be an imobiliser and it seems to have released its grip so we should be able to start it now.

Thanks all.
Even just for reading this...
Baz - you didn't; read this, it was your imagination.....you can;t laugh at me....honest.....

That happens to me all the time, I can do a job over and over - then when it comes to doing it on someone elses car/bike/watch something happens to make me look like a buffoon.

Or more of a buffoon than usual.  :?

She thought I was going to help her & I ended up breaking it for her !!

She was so releaved...
It was worth it tho, spent a few hours in the sun, with a lovely bird, talking old times, delis, kids, music, troubles and work - it was better than having therapy, should be on prescription... ha ha.

Just have to get hold as spanner as her pump seal has gone and that is one job i Never want to do again !!

Had Julia call round and had a look, definately not her OD switch as it drops two geasr at speed !!

I messed with her TPS and improved the speed at which it notches up.
But it still hunted when hovering between 40 & 50, then we couldn;t get it to  repeat it....

She is going to see how she gets on.

The automotive specialist claims they did change the oil.

So any other ideas on why it should be hunting /and / or does anybody have a link to a TPS strip down ??
I removed teh 2 screws and it didn;t want to lift off so I left it not wanting to break anything.

Cheers
Noisey.

Which heat sensor is it, the lone one at the very front of the engine by water pump ??

Yes - the A/T switch, press down, if I recall correctly.

Move foot on throttle, or let off a bit, changes my gear up quicker.......
Maybe she is just between the gear range and it is going up/down.....
