Posted: Wed Sep 26, 2012 16:46 Post subject: Nasty PC prob = XP PSearch window randomly popping up - Help |
|
|
Been offline for sometime now (using another slower PC at the mo)
Me regular PC thrown a right wobbler, keeps crashing out, had the windows installer appearing on screen,
and generally malfunctioning.
Got rid of that when a M.S. msg appeared with a number to use at the M.S. site.
Biggest prob = The XP search window randomly appearing when clicking mouse button.
Actually prevents me from moving open windows around the screen.
Really bad is that this bug/glitch has transferred to my MS Office Word files (havn't checked Excel yet)
or other files such as pictures, music etc.
Found out this when using spare PC. The only way to stop the Search function opening is to Uninstall Office,
Restore to an earlier date, then reinstall Office.
Anyone know how to debug this problem If neccassary have the part Nos. with HMs head printed on them.
P.S. Lost all my Email contacts and messages, and no Email set up at the mo.

Myself id guess you have a virus or malware, I'm no expert but been messing with pc's for many many years if i had this on my pc that would be my conclusion, you can get free malware detection software like Malwarebytes and of course I'm hoping you already have antivirus software you can run. Also try the Microsoft windows support and some of the anti virus companies websites like Symantec and do a search for this problem, if its been seen before they will know and will also know how to fix it.

Thanks Stevie, I do wear protection.
Malwarebytes finds nothing I still think it's a bug or glitch.
M.S. site can be helpful, but I find it very daunting, the American teccy language - that is.
Note - I did find a solution to 1 one of the probs on the M.S. site. That prob did show an error number.
But this XP "Search" window popping up does not show up an error number

Thanks Marc.
Was hoping to sell 2 bikes (i.c.e. type) not Deli.
Still want to sell both bikes, even tho I've just insured them.
Or exchange Honda 600cc Silverwing for Suzuki 400cc Burgman.
To go = 36v Chinese E-bike-------C5, running----- 24v mobility chair, 8 mph large type.

Hi Deker
....apologies first if i ask any 'of course I've done that ! ' questions
Does the 'xpsesarch' always pop-up when you click or just sometimes ? Is it multi function mouse .....does it do it with a different mouse ? ......maybe this is too obvious
Have your task manager open on 'Processes' (with the CPU usage tab used as the active sort showing which processes are using cpu time), does a new process appears when the search box opens ?
Does it do it if you run PC in safe mode...
Have you tried booting machine with non MS 'services' disabled?
.....and
Spybot Search n Destroy is free to download for removing malware, Ccleaner, free to download, can be used to clean up the place and sort out any registry rubbish. Both easily and safely available at download(dot)com.
Is ur AV fully updated, which one is it ? Done an online virus scan ?
All your hardware have latest upto date drivers ?...
As much as it pains me to say so..... XP is a pretty stable OS now...<cough/choke-okay u've said it now >....so most of its glitches have gone if it is fully updated.
Need to go and lie down now cos I have said something good about Windows

Hi
or an old fav
Click 'Start'
Click 'Run'
In the command box type regsvr32 /i shell32.dll ....spaced precisely
Hit 'Enter' and wait........
and Windoze will show you a helpful box to show it has done what you asked.......
....even if it doesn't sort this problem,re-registering this DLL often solves problems that you may or may not noticed u had :D
Please note my XP machine is 'virtual' so at the first sign that it dare to annoy me I can delete it within an instant :D

Noted. Thanks guys.
Pc is with son in law at the mo, he's better at remembering error msg's, etc.
He has tried a different mouse.
Apparently mine won't even download a/v updates
It seems more like it's got flu, or a Byte eating (or is that adding ) virus

hi
The fact it doesn't download av updates is common symptom of infection.....but..still thinking red herring. :? AV could need complete reload/new version, sometimes old av programs refuse to work/update till you download the new ones...
A quick virus scan and try updating av, both in safe mode (with networking) would be a good idea. Anti Virus updates could be acquired on another pc and transfered if the av manufacturer/software supports this..
Has the PC been anything else 'out of the ordinary', infections usually have an agenda- which ranges from simple pirate style marketing, to online fraud and right through to hackers controlling your computer and using it in some kind of botnet DDOS attack on the Government/National Infastructure in some kind of 'firesale'/judgement day scenario. ....ahhh the Revolution..one day
....sorry I digress..is it doing anything it 'didn't do before' ?....
Definately try the regsvr dll fix above.

Has the PC been anything else 'out of the ordinary', not before this. |

Hi Deker
The best way to scan, reveal and delete a virus will be to use a guest operating system type professional virus removal tool.Sorta thing usually done by a reputable local PC Services/Shop as its not for the faint hearted believe me.And it will cost
Freely available tools ....give it a go..maybe
http://www.freedrweb.com/livecd/?lng=en
so......... really best to try as many things as possible before going down the virus route :D :D ...glad ur son in law is on the ball, get it cleaned, updated up a bit and it might suprise you.Could be sumthing simple don't always assume something malicious....
hope it all goes good.

If you haven't already done it I'd also try and back up anything you need off there just in case it all goes wrong and you lose stuff you need, |

Not that funny, this borrowed PC (HP) does not perform like mine, forgets that I'm logged to this site
even tho it has my copy of XP and same ISP & search engine (Google)

Hi Deker
Any progress ?
Sorry for late reply as been working again (becoming a bad habit ).

PC's forgetting stuff may be related to cookie handling policy.Having your computer forget things in this manner can sometimes be a good thing.Saving passwords/logins etc can be dangerous if it stores Paypal/Ebay/Bank passwords....there are those amongst us ( ) that possess the knowledge to use various special targeted software to harvest passwords/Windows Product Keys/Windows Login/16 digit numbers !.... etc etc quite easily given access to a machine either physically or by remote.
If your borrowed PC has your copy of XP then can I assume you have a Windoze XP Installation disc ?....if so, you could use then XP disc to do an Automated System Recovery. This would refresh operating system's important files and may undo what has caused this problem without affecting to much else......A virus infection may still be unaffected by this or may cause it to fail at the time.
Did you have System Restore active and have you tried any of the restore points ?..... A virus infection may still be unaffected by this or may cause it to fail at the time.
Failing this,if you have an Installation Disc you could reinstall Windows ......A virus infection may still be unaffected by this or may cause it to fail at the time.
.....A virus infection may still be unaffected by this or may cause it to fail at the time. - sorry a painful truth i know.
.....A virus infection may still be unaffected by this or may cause it to fail at the time. - but I'm still thinking 'red herring'

Yes - it appears to be HD fault, it has been in another machine as a second/slave drive, it's virtually unreadable.
Bought another one, yet to be inserted/installed.
