Have had the classic pump seal problem, so went into a local diesel specialist;
G.W Dale,
Newcastle Street,
Burslem,
Stoke-on-Trent.
Tel; 01782 837665

They charged me £1.50 +VAT for the 2 seals and said to fit it would be about £80 + VAT. Hope this is of help to anyone in the area with the same problem,
Regards Sheddy :D Sheard.

I've just been speaking to PANDA in fareham,Hants. They reckon it's a ten hour job. At £42 per hour plus Vat that's well expensive. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad blob1 Think I might have to travel to Burslem for a couple of days.

i think thats after the pump is off the car, and would be for just fitting them, not doing any testing on it, so beware Wink

to remove and refit the pump is a job in itself, then it should be tested on the bench tester. i think bertie boy is closer to the mark Shocked

As my post was meet with such disbelief, i have been back to DALES this morning to make sure that they new what vehicle i wanted them to do the seals on.
After having a good look he stated that it was a common fault with Delicas and pajeros as they run a Mitsubishi version of a Bosch pump and the top seal on the Govener housing gives up along with the one on the throttle shaft.
Having seen it, to replace the two seals leaving the pump in situ, he Quoted 3 hours labour at £38.00 per hour = £114.00 + VAT and a couple of quid for the seals.
okay a little more than at first, but still A lot cheaper than most seem to be charging.

Sheardma, I have afeeling that there is also a crank seal that is prone to failing and it is this one that causes the major expense due to the time to remove the pump and ensure the timing is correct.
Perhaps one of the more technical members will be able to update this later when they come on line.

Anyway, if the £114.00 plus Vat works then great as youv'e saved over two hundred pound on my quote from Poole Diesel. thumbright thumbleft

sounds to me that you have an L300(or a 400 with the 2.5 engine), which don't suffer the same as the 400(2.8) pumps, the 400 pumps have to be removed to do the repair, this is where the difference is.
i did my top seal on my 300 with the pump in situ, the seal was 90p and it took about 2 hrs. the front seal leaks on the 400 pumps, you cannot get to it on the car as it is inside the chain casing.

hope this clears the confusion

I can only go by what the garage is telling me, but as mine is a 2.8 it looks like i could be in for a bigger bill than i expected.
If it is the bottom seal is there any visable leakage or does it just cause the fuel to drain back

the bottom seal, leaks oil and will not affect the fuel side at all. deffo have to have the pump off to do a repair on yours, maybe he knows something other diesel specialists (and me) don't.(get a written quote off him, then see if he sticks to it when you have to go back for front seal replacement, when his first repair doesn't work Wink )

Cheers for that i`ll give it a go, I take it the D.I.Y. version posted on the Pajero owner site is for a 2.5 pump not a 2.8 then.
This is why i thought it may be possible without a pump removal.

Have bitten the bullet and booked mine in for the pump seals with RAYNER DIESEL in Newbury, Berks. Tel: 01635-46323. They have quoted 400 + vat Shocked and they say they do one of these a week (on pajeros as well). I asked why they charge a little more and they said they thoroughly bench test the pump after overhauling it. They also have a courtesy car but you need to have your own insurance coverage for it.

Will provide an update after the work has been done and give a rating for them, but they seem to know what they are talking about, and worth paying the little extra as that would be spent on fuel driving around the country to somewhere else.

400+vat, assuming that is inc. removal and refit, is a good price in my opinion Wink if they are doing a full recon.
