Hello everyone, I just changed pistons in both front brakes but after that the car brakes poorly. I bled it already three times at wheels (both front wheels and right rear wheei) but it didn't help. So I guess there is still air in my brake system. I believe I need to bleed it first at the master cylinder. But I don't know how to get to it. Can anyone tell me where it is located and how to get there? I wasn't able to find any manual about the brake system.

There's a section on brakes in the Russek manual that the club sells.

Thanks a lot. Why not wait a week or two for an ordered manual to get here... In the meantime I can simply use my car without brakes. I thought forums are here so we can get information for free. I just wanted to know to bleed the brakes on the master cylinder.

Hey calm down man, no need for that Shocked

The master cylinder is located behind the instrument cluster (speedo etc.). This needs removing to gain access to the master cylinder.

In the mean time take a chill pill man Wink

Thats funny , I thought forums where for like minded individuals to share their experiences of a joint passion and whilst doing so perhaps pick up a few tips and avoid the downfalls others have made and have kindly published.
A bit like a bank you can deposit contributions into the pot and when needed make a withdrawal, you can't just join and demand and expect a withdrawal.

Forums are built on community spirit my friend, something you appear to be lacking!

You could try pinning the brake lever to the floor with a carefully chosen bit of wood to the steering wheel and leaving the system presurised overnight, it allows air to filter back to the resevoir and expands all the seals throughout the system.

Sorry guys I overreacted like that... I am just bit nervous when my car is not braking (altough I am not driving it at the time). I am going to try it as you adviced. Thanks and sorry again.

As swizZer has said, the MC is located behind the speedo cluster.

Here is a little guide to help with how to remove the speedo unit: http://www.MDOCUK.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4176

Cedley1969's suggestion is also a good one - chock some wood in between the pedal and the carpeted section under the drivers seat (where the VIN plate is)

I did the same when I had problems bleeding the clutch on my daily car after fitting a new master cylinder. Wedging the clutch pedal down overnight and the next day it all worked fine. Certainly worth a go ;)

Well I asked my brother to pin the brake pedal... So we will see maybe today or tomorrow. But he was trying the brakes before he pinned it  and he said that they seem okay to him. So I don't know...  But anyway; I have studied the manual you pointed me to about accessing the master cylinder (well, the manual was more about removing the speedo) but I can't see on the pictures anything behind the speedo... Is it possible to bleed it just  through the speedo hole?

I did that but had to remove the fuse for the brake lights as on mine they come on when the pedal
is pressed even with the ignition switched off!!

Fortunately my brother was bright enough to remove the fuse also. But since he has very little time, the pedal is pinned for three days now... So I hope the brake fluid is stil where it should be and all the air is gone.

As long as there isn't a pool of it under the vehicle you should be okay.

Hello again guys. So I was on a little trip today and I have a feeling that the brakes are still not pretty sharp. Do you think it is possible that there is still some air in the master cylinder? That would probably mean that the only option left for me is to bleed it right there (behind the speedo unit). Do you agree?

Did you fit new pads?

Does the pedal feel spongy?

Well one possibility is the pads need bedding in.

I've never had to bleed air at the master cylinder, ever. You could try an eezibleed kit on low pressure and see if that does it, they seem to bleed quite well, but do all 4 wheels.  I suggest low pressure because the pressure they suggest usually leaks past the seals and gets fluid everywhere.
