Been looking at getting a caravan and will have approx £10,000 to spend. I do like the Bailey caravans and i know a few people that have had them for years and loved them. I want a van with a fixed double bed and room for us and our 3 kids. I know the Indiana is only a 4 berth but our son wants to sleep in his own little area which s understandable because he is 13 now and want a bedroom annex in an awning. My question is has anyone on here had one of these or similar layout in a different make. I was looking a Oklahoma but we prefer the new layouts with double bed on the nearside and the toilet / shower on the offside as you get more work surface area in the van. If not the Bailey then other makes to consider!!!

A good friend of mine has a Sterling which is a twin axle which has a large fixed bed and the front can be made up to another bed.

Take a look at Practical Caravan they have a layouts section near the back with letter coding so you can find the models with the layout you want.

the new swift models are really good, you can get a fixed bed with a lot of space on a single axle or a twin axle, and they are a bit wider than the bailey. swift also make the sterling models as well. hth. Laughing

I will have a look at the Practical Caravan Magazine and check out the layouts section and i will have a look for a dealer near me in Hertfordshire tha has the Sterling and Swifts. I did think though that all the new caravans now have the same width, i think the bailey's are 7' 6"??
I do want to get the right one, we have been camping for years and have been using a very large trailer tent for the past 4 years or so and we do quite A lot of camping as the wife works in a school so gets 13 weeks holiday a year and i am self employed so we try to do approx 5 - 6 weeks a year but want a caravan now so that we can do weekends too. I would rather pay more money and get a van that is about 2-3 years old rather than buy a much older one and then change it in a years time. I think what I may do is hire a va with a similar layout and do a couple of trips to make sure it is right for us!
Ayone know of a good place that does hire caravans?? I livew in Hertfordshire and a dealer near me called GT Towing used to do it but don't any longer. A hire place near to the new forest, hampshire, dorset or Devon area would be good as we go down that way A lot!!

never heard of them, but  read a post in caravan mag that more and more people are renting before buying, so maybe it's worth a look see. Laughing

i worked for a baily dealers, we had to go into the van's when they where delivered to re-do all the shabby work they do at the factory !

my friend bought one from us and she loves it to bits....

i would advise taking someone with lots of  caravaning behind them, they are buit to sell for a budget so make sure its a good one.
no offence mate   Smile  just trying to give you a honest reply.

check the roof seams inside as they come unstuck, make sure all he lights have there screws in them. it should be p-d-i'ed before you get it if its a good dealers.

good luck,

btw if i had 10k to spend on a van i would after all that get one, as you Can't really beat them for V-F-M vans

in a word yes is what I'd say, only from looking at all the write ups on the practical caravan issues i've read. swift and ace vans came amongst the top scorers along with buccaneer and elddis. also the dethleffs (german vans)but they are a heavy well made van, no problem for the Deli though. me personally i wouldn't buy a bailey or avondale van going on the recommendations of previous owners reports and the caravan reviews i've read. hope this is of some help as it's a big step buying your first van. good luck. Wink
