|
|
okay so the kids want to turn the mid seat round so they can face each other and chat etc.
There are lap belts for the seats but I was a wonderin' if it's legal or even more importantly safe
I'm sure someone must know this one , can't find a thread on it ?
thanks

I don;t believe so, otherwise why would they do it ? Okay it is a Jap inport but would they allow its import if it wasn;t ??
My mate has 4 kids in his chamonix and they regularly travel facing (bench seat facing backwards, rears facing forwards) so they can talk, play cards etc... He is my lad's scout leader and very safety concious (ex-army engineer & works as a safety officer for BT).
We have often run things around for scouts with the bench seat backwards, you can fit so much more in.

Possibly safer if you hit summat in front cos lap belts rip ya guts apart in a bad smash when you suddenly stop and get thrown forward.

But if the seats are facing backwards with the lap belts (i.e. bench seat), you are thrown backwards into the seat in a head on crash - the lap belt in the back, which would be facing fowards anyway would suffer....(or if the bench seat was facing fowards the poor middle guy & sliding door guys with lap belts as well)...
There was a program a while back about kids in the back of longer MPV cars whiplashing into the rear screen when crashed, so I always ensure the rear head rests are in the back seats when occupied.

Hello Noisey
Yeah i see you point and i try to stick passengers in the 3 points if possible and the laps last. But in a crash with people in the middle bench only i still wonder if facing backwards in a crash and spreading the load over the whole body is safer. Didn't the RAF have seats in their transport planes facing backwards at one time for safety.

You guys are sooo knowledgable ( is that a word )
Thanks, for your help didn't think it would be a prob as the 3 pointers have lap belts as secondaries. That's cool then the kids will be well happy and we can get more stuff in as you say.
:D
Thanks

Take it easy when there's kids in the vehicle. Think about what could happen and be aware at all times. keep your speed down. I only do 50 with the kids onboard and 55 without....fuel consumption has a lot to do with it also but more importantly, lives could be saved if involved in a front on or a rear in |

RAF VC-10s had all their seats facing rearwards as a safety thing,if you do have a bump you are pushed into the seat rather than being trown out of it.
I used to have VW camper(Devon conversion) and it had rear facing seats in the dinette, never a problem with the MOT or anyone feeling unsafe.

The only problem i've got is we'll have 2 stage 1 baby seats plus a stage 2, moving on to 3 stage 2's in a year.
The stage 2 we have is only compatible with 3 pont belts as are most car seats so unless you're talking older kids in booster seats its probably not advisable to use the middle seat anyway. |

Whilst in the army I found all the troop carrying aircraft had rearward facing seats apart from the Hurc's which were side facing.
Motorhomes also have rearward facing seats with lapbelts fitted and a bench between the seats, just like trains do! _________________

Lewis.. LOL.. Only ever used the side seats in a Hurc for take off.. After that it was hammocks and ear defenders/Walkman (yes that long ago) all the way!!!
LondonSteve.. 3 pointer baby seats on the rear 3 pointers and wifey/older kids in boosters on the middle seats facing backwards?? Sorted?
There is the obvious safer shock absorption of distributing the impact across the entire seat, as a paramedic I also saw a few pretty nasty injuries from 3 point seatbelts but suffice to say the passenger would have been smeared without them.. Never came across an RTA with rear facers but many with kids etc using the centre rear lap belt.. I would only say that whilst it may be safer than no belt at all, I will never carry anyone if they had to wear a fwd facing lap belt.. Internal injuries can be severe as can the spinal injuries and very commonly paralysis!! I would rather take another car/not travel but that is only my choice and does not suggest what others should do.. I have scaped up headless and dismembered motorcyclists but I still own a bike
This site may represent rear facing child seats but the same physics apply for everyone http://www.rearfacing.co.uk/facts.php
http://www.desktoplawyer.co.uk/dt/browse/law/index.cfm?fs=lga&sid=75993&aid=35274#link3 This site only suggests responsibility to be wearing a restraint (lap belt) so I am not sure whether the law allows a seat to be facing backwards as long as a restraint is worn? or not?
Anyway, I have an uncle who happens to be a Driving Examiner, he loves this kind of trivia as you can imagine so he is off researching it :-) Whilst I put my feet up and wait.. It is called delegation and I LIKE IT!!!!! _________________ Scrumps

The smallest portables back during my service were called Getto Blasters! My last trip in one was from RAF Gutersloh to RAF Brize Norton - on a stretcher! (OO - OO oww - argh, pass the Pethedine nurse!) _________________

Were you two listening to the The Sweet and Slade etc.I nearly joined the RCT in the early eighties i went up Lunnon for my medical(full of luvverly army ladies) and got thrown out for an hour by a Sergeant bloke for being to noisy (still am ) and decided that the army was not for me.
Did enjoy the cough and drop though laying on me back in my pants coughing so they could see if my bits wobbled.

Obviously never travelled in a Herc with a full load of hairy assed paras,no room to move let alone use a hammock,no relief till the red light went on.
Only "comfortable ride in a Herc was down to Falklands on the original airbridge into Stanley "tinstrip",there was only 20 of us and a load of cargo, trip time 131/2 hours.Coming back was completely different 84 pax and just enough room to change cheeks every couple of hours, trip time 111/2hours.
As to RCT no such thing as the "Donkey Wallopers"now, its the RLC(Royal Logistics Corps) and they are a jack of all trades outfit and master of none.

Come on lads stop moaning about the flights you need to fly to Spain on a charter flight to really experience pain and constriction whilst travelling and if i had known i would have been called a "Donkey Walloper" i would have deffo joined up.
My company used to be called MSAS and our manager at the time only used to only employ ex armed forces and we always thought MSAS stood for MARKS SECOND"AND" SOLDIERS.
