I became a LTM as a result of seeing this thread because I want to help do my bit to keep this site going. Next year, I'm willing to pay the same again if it keeps this site running longer.
I've spent the past few months toying with the idea of getting rid of the Delica, using cost as my primary driver to replace the car, but I can't do it. I think the Delica is by far the best vehicle I've ever owned and this forum is like a Haynes manual with a personality. okay, granted, lots of personalities, but all of them helpful, some of them funny and all with the same passion for their wheels.
Simon, if you were to charge an annual membership to join this forum do you think it would be beneficial not only to the club funds, but in easing administration and reducing the number of spammers that hit the site? No payment, no posts. Would a spammer really want to pay a membership to get his Niagra male erectile disfunction tablets advertised?
My Father-outlaw is a member of the VXON (Vauxhall owners network) who as well as free members also have annual memberships with discount cards for Vauxhall parts and the Halfords discount card. Is this something else that could make an annual membership more attractive? It's possible to save a lot more than the cost of the card on parts throughout the year, thus making the card good value and putting readies directly into the owners club.
I'd imagine that the YD network would be quite an attractive proposition to Mitsubishi, Isuzu etc and Halfords given the age of these vehicles and the capabilities of it's members to perform their own basic servicing.
I appreciate that not everyone has ready funds available to give to the club and especially with the economy in it's present position and christmas around the corner, but would discount cards for these two companies make the burden more bearable? For example, £10 a year YD membership, offset by £13 saving in service parts and fluids is only a £3 saving on parts for the year, but it's £3 in your own pocket and a great amount of assistance at your fingertips.
BTW £13 saving is approx for one service. 2-3 services (oil changes) a year gives you some idea of the savings possible
I've rambled on a bit, sorry, but I really don't want to see this site suffer because of funding issues.

Simon
Cash in the post, I haven't been droping in as often as usual as I've been trolling the teardrop trailer sites most of the summer while I've building my first one so this is the first I've heard of the Delica crunch!
Keep up the good work, being a member has made Deli owning a lot easier (and cheaper) due to the valuable information shared here.
Cheers

Thank you all
Across the clubs, there's been just over a grand raised ... payment for the server renewal due on Wednesday!
All the contributions made over the last few weeks are going directly towards the server renewal ...
I can see I'm going to have to set up a separate account specifically for the Autumn 2009 renewal!

Simon, I have just paypal'd a tenner to you.
I only have one idea regarding fund raising. Visibility......I have only just found this thread, and then only because I went looking for a post I made and it had been moved to "common room"
I View new updates on General Technical, L300 Technical, and L400 Technical, I don't read anything else, and so I never saw this until now, how many others do the same?
Why don't you email the entire membership list?
regards
Richard |

Simon
Just popped another £20 in to the coffers.
Hope it all helps.
I know I've brought this up before but why not approach traders to sponsor sections of the forum, Andrew Pages etc etc surely they would appreciate the focused advertising for their services.
I know on a detailing forum I visit they pay £200-300 per annum to sponsor an area eg L400 Technical ( for Pages ) surely this would help out considerably _________________ 100% BIO DIESEL ! Well not quite at the moment

I am a paid up member of an online photography group/forum (APUG) that uses a business model I think may be of interest.
Similar to MDOCUK most forums are viewable by the general public, but by registering for free you are allowed to post in the forums and have access to a few other members only forums. If you pay a subscription then you have additional privilages such as the use of a gallery to show off your work.
The server itself is funded by equally by four major companies who have an interest in being exposed to the site users.
Then there's advertising. It is quite subtle, all of it is relevent (Google ads were tried and quickly dumped) and if you subscribe you have the option of switching off the ads (although I leave them on as they are all relevent to the subject and can be useful).
This site has a registered membership of about 20,000, so MDOCUK's near 5,000 plus the other Yellow Diamond clubs should be enough of a market to tempt some sponsors and advertisers.
Of course all this functionality takes a lot of maintenance and programming cost and the site owner basically runs it as a full time job.
MDOCUK does have the small advertising block in the top left corner, does the site get much revenue from these and is it based on 'click through' or a flat rate ?
I think the quality and quantity of information on MDOCUK makes it a resource well worth paying for, I also think a lot of people do not realise the costs involved in providing this resource (through no fault of their own) so there is no shame in rattling the tin. |

I know a lot of clubs like this have members areas where people can read but not post unless they are paid up members.... _________________ Regards

Simon
sorry, I saw this thread last year but got side tracked - no excuse I know....
I have been off line for quite a while, mainly due to work, last thing I want to do after a day on a computer is spend more time on it...
Anyway, This forum has saved me loads last year in help with pulley, glow plugs & brakes and now this year after a 1500 mile round trip skiing the alternator & another glow plug has gone so even more saved by searching threads for advice.
Thanks to one & all, Happy New Year.
A very grateful £20 in post
