PostPosted: Thu Aug 02, 2018 15:28    Post subject: clutch related noise, bearing ? Reply with quote

Hi guys,

I'm getting some noise when I start the engine in the morning. It goes off when I depress the clutch, and may come back if I release it, but usually one push is enough. It sounds like a loose metal part.
This is a 92 4WD van, with v5m21 gearbox, I heard this box has problems with the input shaft bearing, and I heard something about thrust bearing (regarding noise and clutch). Clutch was replaced by previous owner 100 000kms ago (now 250 000kms on it), is it time again for a replacement ?
I believe that thrust bearing comes with the clutch kit, what about the input shaft bearing ? I cannot spot that part on the diagram to find part number....
Any advice on this is welcome, thanks !

David

Generally, the ball bearings used in gear boxes are standard sizes, available from most bearing suppliers -
But we are talking Delica here, Mitsubishi might do things a bit differently  Rolling Eyes

Hi, Belette. Try trawling this forum for posts by Pink Pig on this - he has done most things to his manual van. It might be the same part as on the older Pajero/Shogun 2.5 diesels.

Hullo fellow M/T L300 owner!

you might already have done so but if not have a trawl through the US and Canadian Delica forums, there's a few buried notes on that transmission.
Just had a quick look through and found this:
http://www.Delica.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18602&p=138882&hilit=V5M21&sid=e3443b1b72a081d441d36d3056c4e465#p138882
First post lists MD731727 as the part no for the input shaft bearing (this is a 1996 V5M21) which might be what you're looking for.
I also note that this post is quite recent, and the poster, growlerbearnz seems pretty knowledgeable, so it might be worth a message.

Hope this helps - I'm collecting as much info on all of this topic as I can find, as I suspect it is going to come in useful in future years. Good luck, let us know howyou get on.

Jeroen

thanks for the links and tips !
I have to admit I saw this post (only its title) and I had no idea it had part numbers for everything !

It looks like a few bearings are changing name, so just to clarify everything :
- thrust bearing is also called release bearing and is the one sitting inside the clutch (and provided with new clutch kits)
- pilot bearing is the same as input shaft bearing ? I'm a bit confused about that one, it's not part of the clutch kit, but should be replaced at the same time. The v5m21 is putting too much stress on it. I've got the manual for pajeros, but the gearbox is a KM145, a bit confused as well with the naming here....
Thanks again guys, I also need to find a workshop to machine the mitsubishi tool MD99826 to re align the clutch...... it sounds like a big job in the end :p

Last time I got the clutch changed I also got the whole thrust bearing, release arm, spigot bearing changed - everything!
The local garage did the work and sourced all the parts, so don't have the part numbers, but same as Pajero 2.5

I had lots of noise which went pressing the pedal - it was the thrust bearing but also the release arm - the pivots were quite worn so while the box was off I got the lot done.
When I had the gearbox rebuilt many years ago I suspect the workshop didn't replace the release arm.

click around this for part numbers:

http://mitsubishi.epcdata.ru/delica_star_wagon/p25w/snxt/engine/piston-crankshaft/

I think this is the spigot bearing?

Which looks right...

But if you call a mitsu dealer the parts dept should be able to help

Yeah I'm afraid I'm really not much more help than the above, sorry...  Sad

Regarding gearbox naming/codes, this post might be helpful:
http://www.MDOCUK.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21719&highlight=v5m21
This also should give some clues to what other vehicles used the "same" box, although the housing is obvs different for L300's (linkage is different).

I really need to go back to work, but nothing like procrastination by learning about L300's!

Just re-found this link -
http://www.Delica.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18602

Some useful photos there - plus one purports to be of a package (with part number) for "input shaft bearing", again MD731727.

You could do a DIY gearbox rebuild thread! ;)  8-)  (please?)

thank you very much for digging out all those precious posts !
I wasn't so successful at it :p

Alright I'll see what's damaged but I'll go for a new clutch kit + bearing, this new input shaft bearing with seals and fork bearing. Gearbox sounds good so far, and all the problems seem to be clutch related.
Really appreciate your help guys !

just realized that spigot bearing is on the engine side on the flywheel, how is this related to the clutch ?

The spigot bearing fits into the flywheel, and supports the input shaft after it passes through the clutch centre. To make a simple clutch centring tool, find a piece of tube or round bar that will fit/is slightly smaller than the spigot bearing centre. Wrap electrical tape around the end until it is an easy (not tight) push fit into the bearing. Wrap tape around the bar where the clutch driven plate will line up until that too is an easy push fit. Then fit the pressure plate. The make-shift tool should withdraw and re-insert easily and equally, perpendicular to the flywheel face.

I was somehow expecting something else.... helps to see it open before I have to do it :p

thanks for the tip for the custom tool ! I've got the specs in the manual, with it would take weeks for a local shop to machine it, great tip with the rod and tape Smile love the cheap way !

Hi guys,

back on this topic as I'm finally getting funds to order parts, I'm a bit confused with part numbers....
according to partsouq, this is the clutch parts I've got for my L300 1992 4WD :
clutch cover : MD723544
clutch disc MD742366 replaced by MN110717
clutch release bearing MD719469 replaced by MR195689
spigot bearing MD002613

now, I was looking at clutch kits, first with blueprint, but they don't have a kit matching all of them, at least one element will not match, is this normal ?
the blueprint parts I managed to find are ADC43205N, ADC43163 and ADC43306, but I cannot find a kit with those/

Then I found this kit https://xtremeoutback.eu/product/24055/KMI23006-1A/
no part number, but it should fit according to their website
Do you guys have a reference for a full kit or other ideas to get parts ?
Many thanks !

One more topic to close, changing a clutch is a hell of a job !!! I had to rent a workshop and two guys to help me out :O
Anyway, I'm not sure where my noise was coming from.... but it's gone.
Correct exedy clutch is this one : MBK2029
I also replaced the pilot bearing MD002613.
The spring holding my fork was gone, I'm not sure if we really need it, and I didn't have a new fork with me......
Thrust bearing and pilot bearing were both looking and feeling good, so not sure where was the problem.... Anyway, my clutch disc was in a bad shape, and my rear crankshaft seal was a bit wet.

If anyone is replacing the rear crankshaft seal, you also need to renew the gasket on the plate around the rear seal (MD183244 ) and the main seal MD069947. While there I also replaced a few seals on the gearbox, and the one on the rear differential, which requires insane power tool :O

We spent a solid 8hrs on the whole thing.....

Now we did everything with power tools, I will have to check a few nuts for correct torque.... another day :p
