Thanks Andyj,
I have downloaded a workshop manual from a link on this forum site, but i am a bit of a loss as there is different settings. The PDF file says:
Engine 4G6 or engine 4D5 for a 1995 model, mines 1994, I am confused, would you have the complete worshop manual i could download if its the same.
Hope this makes sence.

thanks andy, this is doing my head in.
Problem again:
Smoking bad in idle and reversing.
Engine starts first time no problems.
Over 1000rpm runs fine, no smoke, no loss of power.
I have been told could be:
Wrong valve timing or sticky valve.
Worn piston rings.
injector pump, needs overhaul (Can't get anyone to take it off engine) (to big a job for my wee mind)
injector pump, advance timing (Can't reach 2 of the 3 bolts without stripping entire pump)
where the heck do i go from here. _________________ World of Owls - Northern Irelands only Owl and Bird of Prey sanctuary. |

okay, i haven't read your other thread (blue smoke black smoke...) but it looks like you need to take a step back and start again. starting with the basics (sorry if you or your machanic has already done all this) its pretty unusual for tappet setting to be out on this engine (they are shimmed rather than the adjustable type)
1) check your air filter for being dirty (main cause of black smoke)
2) get your pump timing checked before that check your bottom pulley is in good condition as if the rubber has split the TDC mark will not be in the correct position, you need to check by looking through the oil filler cap, there should be a square nobble behind the 1st cam lobe that points upwards.
3) check your egr isn't sticking open, you will need to blank it off to see if that has any effect rather than just removing the vac pipe.
4) have your injectors tested, a poor spray pattern can cause all sorts of problems
a few things to remember about smoke and deisels:
are black/dark grey smoke normally points to over fuelling/lack of air (poor fuel air mix)
white smoke normally points to unburnt fuel (usually on cold starts but not always) e.g. a glow plug down or a leaking injector
blue smoke is normally burning oil, not always noticeable on diesels
but also remember that white steam could be mistaken for smoke, if there is a coolant problem and it is leaking into the cylinder it will come out the exhaust as steam and will have a slightly sweet smell that you can almost taste.
all in all if you have black and blue smoke, there is likely to be 2 problems so best tackle 1 at a time
hth and hope it doesn't sound patronising

A Compression test would tell you if valves worked and if the rings worked (well at least the compression rings) _________________ Regards

Thanks guys any help at all is grateful.
I had my car to a friend who is an absolute genious with mechanics but due to ill health cannot preform any work.
He said that the smoke i am getting in idle is unburnt fuel and the car is definetly off a cylinder in idle. He is 90% convinced my problem is valve, piston ring, or even a small hole on piston related.
He gave me a an easy test to try to narrow down the cylinder and or valve causing the problem, where as, start engine and loosen the injecter feed pipes one at a time, thus a change in running would identify the cylinder or vavle causing the problem.
jobs done so far.
New injectors fitted.
EGR blanking plate fitted.
new filters and oil
all hoses and intercooler checked and cleaned.
I will try the above post instructions today.
Ta guys,

Point to Note!
The fuel pressure in injector pipes is very high and would inject diesel in side your hands with ease so be very careful anywhere fuel lines while it’s running.
Never look for diesel fuel leeks with you hands.
