I noticed Ace Deli' "fessed" up to being a "Ham".... I wondered how many others on the forum
had at some time spent hours, weeks, and months learning all the black arts and secret handshakes
of the RSGB?  Shocked
Earlier this year, I re-licensed myself, so I could play with my toys (legally) again. I was pleasantly suprised
to learn it was "Free" or a one off £20 payment for a lifetime license........  AND you could do it all on line
which was great.
I was even asked about my preferences for a callsign?  Wow, has that changed or what?  Unheard of in days
gone bye, unless you inherited your late parents callsign.
Anyway, I unfortunately had to cough up the £20, cos I'm to old and passed my RAE too long ago. But It's worth
getting your licence if you can get it again for noubt, and you don't have to mess about renewing it each year.

I did eventually select my old, original callsign, as all the new ones had way to many letters, and besides I
would have to learn it all again :?

VE6RAH here,

In Canada licensing is also a one time fee and then free for life, Callsigns are also at your choosing (assuming they are available)

We also get a special deal where our number plates for the vehicle are our callsign at no extra charge Smile

okay, my callsign is G4HYG.

I like the Canadian idea where you can get your callsign on your numberplate for free. I've checked mine with the DVLA and it would cost £499!

Chris

I seem to remember the government (spit) saying many years ago, that when we adopted the previous license plate configurations,
with the single prefix letter rather than the suffix, that we would have first pop at our call signs Shocked
Ye Right! Of course we did.................Not.

Typical government BS

Glad at least it worked for the Canadians..  :D

I might fit a CB for offroading though.

Mine is 2E0YPG, usually on foot with my portable FT817 when I'm up mountains or whatever, and have never used it in the Deli.

Do you still have to learn morse code for the licence?
I started way back in the 60s but got sidetracked by women and rock n' roll and never completed the course.

I was thinking of looking into it down here using a 2 metre band set which is the main set used here, have the wiring, mounting plate, and antenna mount already as she was a taxi, have to find out about licencing as they don't seem to do complicated things down here like in the UK.
Would be handy for emergencies and when I lose the mobile phone signal.

No clubs here as I can see but loads of people use the 2 metre band and the Police have a 24hr monitor on 2 frequencies which is handy if you get stuck somewhere.
Will look into it further.

Ian.
