hi
after a brief encounter with a french motorway crash barrier Sad i now have a bent front bullbar. Its been pushed down about 3 cm on the drivers side. the chrome bars are still straight but the lower mounting is pushed down. is there anyway of straightening it out? anyone else done this? had experience of straightening bars?

i was expecting a written off front wing, but was amazed there's no other damage to the Delica (95 super exceed) apart from a few scratches to the black plastic. just glad i wasn't a car.

if they can't be bent back, anyone know where i can get a replacement or aftermarket bars?

thanks

ouch. glad you're okay.

I'd suggest taking several photos of the bent part from different angles and posting them here to give us a more exact idea of the problem.

just got the bumper off

here's the pics hopefully!

the top mount needs to come up and twist vertical
and the lower leg (nearest in th second pic) needs to come up 2cm

I'm thinking a new upper mount would be the easiest but not sure where to get one, and the lower leg Question

thanks for the help

I might be wrong but try and find a local engineers workshop and let them look - I've had them putting blow torches on metal parts and gently putting them back into shape in the past (cycle frame and a bent connection on a trailer)... But please remember the bar that saved you more damage this time may well be weakened by the impact anyway and might not be as strong next time?

p.s. I'm off to the South of France later this year - how much are the tolls, is the diesel cheaper and anything I should be wary of? (I know about the automatic speed traps between tolls)

All advice greatfully received....... Smile

hmm looks like i might be better looking for a new one, anyone know where to start?

tolls vary but i reckon 60 euro's from north to south is about right, diesel's just gone up a bit, you'll get it cheaper at places like carrefour and l'eclerc at 86 cents a litre or on the peage for about 96. theres not many speed cameras but they are appearing slowly. hope this helps

don't brake hard after the unusual french driving manouver in front cause the gendarmes will charge you for the damage to the crash barrier Sad

Depends where you're going, but its a lot cheaper to avoid paris and go around it via Evereux and you will pay hardly any toll - I've just come back from just north of Toulouse for about 20Euro, but don't forget the rush hours can slow you down off the motorway.
Paige speed trap trick is to take your breaks between toll booths - so you can do 100mph all day, and have coffee/lunch to bring your average speed back to legal before you exit the toll area.
Limoge is a traffic jam!
As in the UK its often worth pulling off the motorway into local towns for cheaper fuel and better food etc.
However if you have a good roadmap of France the Shops/Fuel type services are marked as blue semi-circles while the picnic area/toilets aires are marked as green semi-circles.
Have a great time!
