|
|
Hi guys/gals
I bought a nice shiny blue Super Exceed LWB from Southern Motors a few weeks a go.
Unfortunately, the Bus started dying whilst driving within a week. The thing would just completely die and would only go again with the help of a nice RAC man tinkering with the fuel pump solenoid.
The last time it did, the RAC put it on the back of a truck and dropped it off at SVS in Bournemouth. I got them to drop it off there, becuase they seem to get feedback on this site .... not convinced at the moment.
The RAC man was convinced it was just the fuel pump solenoid but SVS think its the fuel pump. SVS initally said it was due to a contaminated fuel filter but a test drive, after a filter swap, proved otherwise! Couldn't see how a dirty fuel filter would cause the bus to cut out and not start again anyway myself.
Has any one else had a similair problem? If so what was the solution in your case? Any other ideas from people in the know?
I know SVS seem to have good feed back on this site but they've had my bus over a week now and they haven't even taken the fuel pump off yet to be sent away for servicing .... getting pretty frustrated as I'm meant to be driving it around the Loire Valley in the next couple of weeks .... arhhhh!
Thanks for listening

Hi Andy and welcome to the club :D
When you had the prob with the motor did it just cut out completely, and did it restart at any point at all?
If it stopped and didn't re start at any point then it sounds more likely to be the fuel pump cut off solenoid, the solenoid has a small plunger inside it that is basically magnetised, and when the ignition is on the solenoid energises and lifts the plunger and holds it up to allow the flow of fuel,if the solenoid shouls lose its electrical supply the plunger will then drop until re-energised,as it would if you switched the ignition off.
I had a solenoid playing up on an old vehicle i had and eventually it decided to give up on a level crossing id stopped the motor to wait for the train and then started got halfway and it gave up so theres me sittin in the middle of a train track,so i just turned it over in gear to get me off the ruddy crossing.
The way i tested it was a bit crude really i took out the solenoid then removed the plunger ,put it back and it started no problem only problem was i had to stall it to stop it
The first thing to check with them is basic just see if theres power at the solenoid calbe with the ignition on ,if not then work back from there,id be suprised if it were the fuel pump as i would think it would at least manifest itself over a period of time at least giving some warning ,ie rough running etc etc,
I hope theyget it sorted for you quickly matey ,hope this helps (apart from my waffling ) all the best
Also matey i take it from the fact you dropped it at svs your local to that area? may help also if you pop your location on your profile as I'm sure there will be a few memebers nearby who can offer some practical help.

Hi Marc
Thanks for the quick reply.
The failure was without warning. It happened twice with me, once at a roundabout then again driving along on an A road. Quite scary as it just stops dead. It won't restart at all. If it had happened on the motorway I could have had an Artic sitting on my lap!
The RAC checked that current was going to the solenoid and fuel wasn't going to the engine. The last RAC chap knocked the solenoid which then let me start the engine. He wrote this on a note for the garage but they promptly ignored it saying they haven't had to replace one before!
I'm just feeling a bit frustrated that I'm going to be without the vehicle for ages whilst the diesel pump is reconditioned .... only not to fix the original problem of a little solenoid that could have been swapped easily.
SVS is down in Bournemouth but I live up near Guildford. I took it there because the dealer I bought the Delica off has an account with them (so more likely to get them to pay for it) and becuase I thought they were "Delica specialists" ... we shall see!
Thanks

Hi Andy
Good luck matey i hoipe they come through, the only good thing to come i suppose is the fact the fuel pump is being fully recond at no cost to you,so at least you won't get the seals going on you sometime afterwards and then being without the Delica again why there done (not cheap neither well the parts are the labour isn't!)
The stop control solenoid would be the easiest thing to have replaced but i bet main dealer part only and not at all cheap (prob at least about £90 i would have thought) i know a ford one was £36 so mits is gonna be a lot more than that!
Keep us posted on what happens matey ,hope u get your motor back quickly and all sorted when it is.
All the best,
