panel to fill in the gaps is usually available at specialised car stereo shops, halfords may be able to help too |

Hi
Halfords and stereo shops can help you, but they will charge you £15 - £20, for various adaptors/fitments etc that come with it and you don't need. Go to a scrapyard and get the pocket out of a ford sierra or a mazda. Its a black plastic tub/pocket thingy that is the same size as the front of a standard sized (1 DIN) stereo, and slots in either above or below your new stereo. Should just push in. Cost - well I paid 50p for mine! No tools needed to remove it from old banger - just pull it out from centre part of dashboard.
As far as removing the old one goes - pull off the 4 knobs on the heater controls. There are 3 screws pointing upwards underneath the centre piece of dash trim/heater and stereo surround. Remove these three, but be careful not to lose the little clips behind that they screw into! Remove ashtray, and pull surround away from dash - be wary of spring clip where ashtray was and rods on heater controls(now exposed 'cos you took the knobs off!)
Once this surround is off, there should be 4 x screws exposed holding the old stereo mounting brackets in place - remove these and voila! the old stereo should pull out. Obviously don't forget the wiring behind. Unscrew the stereo from these mounting brackets and remove old stereo.
Now you have a choice where to mount new stereo - top or bottom. Would suggest top or you will have problems viewing lcd display at that angle. Take old stereo mounting brackets, and screw them onto side of new strereo using original screws. If you have a newish stereo with one of these cage things that it mounts into - it won't fit!! Remove it and screw the brackets straight into the side of the actual stereo - sounds drastic I know, but the holes should already be there, in the right place! Now screw new stereo and brackets back into dash, in reversal of how you removed old one. Put back together, and switch on! :D
As far as wiring goes - you can get an adaptor lead - again halfords or a car stereo shop that simply plugs between the mitsi and the stereo - 30 seconds!! Wouls suggest you try stereo to see if it works BEFORE you put it all back together again. Otherwise, like me, if it doesn't, you have to start all over again!
Good luck - shouldn't take more than an hour I reckon. |
