if one was to buy an august 1996 Delica, needing an sva test,If i stored it till after august first, could i just then mot it as a now over ten year old car and no sva.or am i being stupid!!!!

Sounds reasonable to me. You will have to wait until then to register it! So obviously you can't drive it till then.

we often do that when we bring cars in through the jap auctions, gives ya that little bit of time to do all the essential services,checks etc

Yep, you have to wait until 10 years from the month and year it was first registered. Which is NOT what autoadvan told me when I bought mine from Japan, so I had to get the SVA so I could use it! (for 8 months!)

I've bitten the bullet and gone for it.Gives me 6 weeks to service ,fit towbar,chrome the bull bars ,ect ect.I,m all excited,been looking for ages for a decent one.George
