I like many people, have a smokey Delica, black smoke on hittiing the gas pedal. starts okay and does not smoke all the time only on hitting the gas pedal while stationary or accelerating away from the lights or uphill.

Have changed the oil filter, fuel filter, Air filter with no effect, next options I believe are the injectors, or the fuel pump.

Is there anybody in the suffolk, essex area, who can point me in the direction of some body who can do my injectors and if necessary overhaul a fuel pump.

If it's only when you hit the loud pedal it sounds more like the fuel pump. It probably doesn't even need an overhaul, just turning back a bit.

Most Delicas/Pajeros/all diesels have the pumps turned up too far when the leave Japan. 99 times out of 100 they have to be turned back for SVA/ESVA/MOT purposes. Most times they don't get turned back up again, but sometimes they do get turned back up, occasionally too far.

There are threads on the forums about the location and adjustment of the pump on the Mitsubishi 2.5TD engine. Do a search for "fuel pump adjustment 2.5" and I'm sure you'll find something useful!

Remember though, with a diesel it's perfectly normal to get some black smoke puffing when you hit loud. Look at all these bran new diesel Merc, BMWs etc - they ALL do it. Obviously leaving huge trails of black smoke that obscure following drivers' vision isn't right though.

Also, blanking the EGR valve can ease the smoking. A blanking plate is available through the club shop and takes 5 minutes to fit. Make sure you use silicone gasket sealant with it though otherwise you can get some blowby. When you buy the plate you'll receive a note in it with URLs for the threads that explain how to fit it. £5 well spent!

As for the injectors, if blocked these can cause rough running but most problems can be cured using an injector cleaner such as Wendos, oops I mean Millers or Wynns or STP.

As for the fuel pump - the fisrt sign of a problem here is if the motor stalls after a hundred yards or so and then takes a while to get going again. Leaky fuel pump seals usually allow air into the system.

Unfortunately we (I) do often go . Try being more specific, i.e. select the right category and if possible an Author. HTHs

Embarassed Can't find any reference to fuel pump adjustment myself. Various mentions of pump overhauls etc. Can you actually adjust the fuel pump? There are engine experts on this forum so it's over to them..... Shocked

Some stuff I found on L400 threads:

Also this post which has a reference to a Pocuk thread:

Thanks for the info

have ordered an EGR plate from the club shop. Will start with that then consider playing with the fuel pump adjustment.

Hi

have fitted the egr blocking plate, and have noticed an immediate difference the smoke, and performance and fuel consumption.

I no longer have an embarrassing trail of smoke following me down the road when i set off from the lights clearly visible in the mirror.

now it is only visible if I'm standing behind it when the gas peddle is hit, and then not so bad.

i m probably going to finish running this tank of diesel through, just to check the change in mileage, then try adjusting the fuel pump to try and get rid of the last bit of smoke.

so far impressed. not a hard job to do. recommend it for any body with a smokey L300
