Just fitted new belts and found the alternator started to screech at low revs, decided to bite the bullet and take it out and give the bearings a grease.

I was a bit worried about opening it up, but it wasn't that bad, anyhow heres how I got on.  Just incase anybody else needs to do the same.

1. Remove the four bolts on top holding everthing together.

2. separate the alternator, a few taps with a light hammer may be needed, you want to remove the end with the pulley and the top cover, (shown below).  Once its free, pop the black dust cover off the bearing on the end of the shaft, and give it a clean and a good smear with new grease.  It may be an idea to clean the commutators (the 2 copper rings below the bearing) with a bit of steel wool, while you've got the alternator open.

3. Now the tricky part putting it back together. You may have noticed when seperating the alternator, that the bushes are spring loaded and they have popped out.  First thoughts, oh s#*t how am I going to put this back together, theres no way to retain the bushes.  I found that if you make a hook from some stiff wire, you can hold the bushes back by fishing the hook through one of the cooling vents on the side of the alternator.  I used an old split pin that a straightend out, popped a bit of grease in the bottom of the alternator where the bearing sits and held back the bushes.  Theres just enough room to get the armature back in possition and remove the hook.

4. Line everything back up and pop the bolts back in, hey presto a nice free alternator.  I didn't bother trying to do the bearing on the front behind the pulley, it felt okay and I decide it would be awkward trying to remove the nut that secures the pulley to the shaft.
