I would like to fit a Kenlow before we go away (12th Aug) but don't feel competent to do this alone. Since the kit is not specially made for the L400, the rad needs to come out to do it. Is anyone interested in giving me a paid hand? I am happy to travel up to 100 miles (from Bagshot) and more than happy to pay the going hourly rate. I could be free tomorrow (Friday) or Sunday, even Saturday at a push.

Ummm... what's wrong with the standard fan and so special about a Kenlow?

Cheers

well.. that's a very good question! My view (uneducated) is that the normal fan uses power from the engine, slows the warmup period and is noisy whereas a Kenlow is electric, only cuts in when required and most importantly: is a gadget :D

Hi steve,
There was a bit on here a while ago about fitting an electric fan,

A lot a peoples views were that the engine still needs cool air blown over it when stationary.

This is nothing proven, but I wouldn't like to find out the hard way Shocked

I'm sure other views will come along Wink

gotcha.. this is a twin fan setup and I guess one can always turn down the regulator or even have an override switch if necessary.. but thanks for the advice as ever.

is the fan on a Delica viscous?

I don't think much will be gained with an electric fan if the original is working correctly.
A viscous fan would keep a more steady temperature in my opinion and would not fully load the engine normally.
Whereas an electric one would wait until the engine was up to a high temperature and then cool it quicker. But the power for the electric fan still has to come from somewhere, ie. the alternator, which loads the engine.

So it's which one is best? Some load most of the time, or high load some of the time.?!

Modern (dare I say it) Range Rovers have a viscous fan. I guess it's to keep a more steady temperature when moving slowly.

yep, I take the point. Swings & roundabouts in a way.. Obviously it's essential that the water pump is functioning 100%.
Can't find any other posts on this so I guess I'll have to play guinea-pig!

Hi Steve
The main fan is Viscous type
BUT DO look into the front grill there is on most two electric fans and I think there was a passing comment that someone was going to run without the visc. to see how it behaved this was Novemberish on the Paj side prior to our migration here.
I ran a kenlow on a Mk2 transit , kept it cool enough solo, warmer towing
But wrecked the rad cos the mounts fit onto the fins....
which go flat....
= loose rad =chaffing of fan feet to waterways = leaks =£
kenlow fans were about £45-50 then (1982) the rad was twice that.
the stock fan went back on.
Another Steve near us just replaced his L400 rad at the cost of £350
Be cautious.

Regards
Alan

Just popped next door (POCUK) have a look at this if it works or run a search on cooling fans.

thanks all for your feedback; is this forum useful or is it useful.. Special thanks to Mr101. As he says, putting up an approx. location is worthwhile. Not going to even think about the Kenlo til I get back from holiday, then we'll see. Thanks again.
