Very happy with my L300.

But, I am driving this nice 4x4 in 2 wheel drive all the time when on the road!

So - is it possible to replace the transfer box with a center diff? With or without a lock, need not be Mitsu.

There are three possibilities:

Tolally impossible - there is nothing (Mitsu or other) the will physically fit in the space.

Nearly impossible - can find something that fits, but major engineering required. (I have access to lathes and milling machines which may help keep costs down).

Not impossible - i.e. just about possible!

Is this a totally silly idea? Or has it been done?

All comments welcome, except about my mental state!

Steve

Why does the L400 come with Super Select full time 4x4?

L300 plus center diff = cheap Super Select?

Sounds to me like you're looking to fit an L400 box under an L300.....
I wonder??
Personally have no idea if this would be possible...
but it LOOKS LIKE there is plenty of space under there

By full time 4x4 i think he means it can be used at anytime in 4WD unlike the L300 that can only use 4WD whilst off road i believe ,whereas the L400 can use it at anypoint i think the L300 in 4WD on the road would suffer from diff wind up :? maybe wrong tho but thats my limited understanding of it :D

superselect 4WD has not changed scince the dawn of time!!! even brand new shoguns have the same basic principal just tweaked abit to withstand the extra power. so in short 2WD or 4wdh can be used on th road on any superselect system. trust me i am a technician

Hi all,

I think to modifiy a L300 with a SuperSelect T-Case gear should be possible. But in my opinion the problem with the L300 is the very short rear diffshaft. So an SS -Tcase is even longer than a part time T-case. If you whant to change you have cut off the diffshaft and weld it new. No problem so far but one thing is hardly to change especialy when the car is equiped with special suspesions which lift the rear. The short driveshaft stands very steep (not parallel to carbody). If you cut it its getting worse and the transmission is getting noisy.
But I also think with the very short wheelbase of a L300 it is even on road possible to use 4x4 in wet condidtion. I never missed it in dry conditions. I also see an advatage in simplicity of the partime T-case. It si possible to repair it with normal tools.

see you wolf
