Hi all,

I’m still chasing a long ongoing unidentified noise in my drive train. Possible transfer box or propshaft or rear diff or something else... To isolate the front from the back and take the strain out of the rear end it has been recommended that I take the rear prop shaft off, engage 4WD to drive from the front wheels and see if I get the same noises. It seems sensible to me - can anyone see why I shouldn’t do it?  I know it was a common fix on the early Freelanders (and many of the Freelanderers didn’t realise they were actually driving a 2WD car).

The Delica is a 2006 3L V6 petrol. Auto gearbox. Manual transfer box.

Grateful for any advice.

Please clarify your comment  "Auto gearbox. Manual transfer box"

It's quite safe to remove either front or rear propshaft and drive. Several have had to do it, whilst getting off rough terrain after breakdowns.
Just drive a bit slower if only using the front wheels.

Just to add my two pennorth, and I'll bow to the greater knowledge of actual L400 owners, but I am suggesting you drive it with the centre diff locked - not sure how much the viscous diff could cope with taking all the drive, but as Lewis says, definitely go easy while the back axle is disconnected, - it is designed to do most of the work.

Thanks andyman. Makes sense - I’ll take it carefully.
