|
|
Hi Folks, I've bought a L400 a few months ago that was converted into a camper complete with a fibreglass poptop roof. I'd like to get some roof bars installed so that I can strap a couple of surf boards (i.e. nothing too heavy) onto the roof. Has anyone done this before? If so, any recommendations? |

I greatly doubt that a "Poptop' roof will have sufficient strength to support roofbars with luggage on them.
They are more likely going to distort the roof panel, so it will not sit properly on the upper sides of the van sidewallks.
The L400 uses gutter mounted roof and light bars, but a poptop one would need to be bolted through the roof panel itself. _________________

,As Lewis indicates, the fibre glass of a pop-top roof will be pretty thin, but as you only intend to carry lightweight surfboards, it might be possible, but the the biggest stress may be due to the 'wing effect' of the boards at motorway speeds. I suggest you reinforce mounting points with additional fibre glass matting/resin, and then spread the loading of the bar fixing points with large stainless steel washers or plates, under, and on top of the pop-top. _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |
