From memory, the pump seal can be more prone to failing/leaking when it's cold. Mine started to fail when there was a frost overnight, and yes it was intermittent when it started. The problem was when it cut out, you suddenly lose power steering which made pulling over safely a bit of an issue.

An additional issue in cold weather is that the fuel filter rubber sealing ring can also shrink, letting in air, which affects fuel getting to the injectors.

Ensure the filter is as tight as possible!

Cheers guys! 👍
Went out today, started first touch, then stalled after 15/20 seconds. Restarted after a couple of seconds cranking, with a burst of white smoke and ran perfectly.

Is there a way to check the pump seal or is it diagnosed by symptoms alone?
Fingers crossed MOT early next week then I’ll be using it regularly, which might help things one way or another.

Well my Delica is through the MOT but hasn't fixed itself, unfortunately!

I mentioned the issue to a guy in the pub  Rolling Eyes  and he said Vauxhall Fonteras commonly had the same problem.  A common fix (bodge?) was to fit a non-return valve to the fuel supply pipe.
Is there any reason that would be a bad idea?

Thanks for your help, Nick

I wouldn't recommend it as a long term fix. If it is the pump front seal, as said above, all the time the engine is running, you will have diesel leaking into the sump, diluting the oil, which will eventually damage all lubricated wearing surfaces. The tricky part of the job is not in removing and replacing the seal, it is getting the pump re-fitted in the exact correct timing position, due to the spiral-cut gears. If the chain is good, it doesn't need to be disturbed.

Hi there, don’t know if you fixed your pump seal yet, but be sure and fit the Mitsubishi seal, they aren’t too expensive, first time I had a “friend” of the family do mine and within four years I was having it redone! It’s not just about size (oooer missus)..some seals are less effected by diesel.
In the end I gotta guy off here to do it (the seal man?)...he’s done it so many times he knows what to wiggle and what can stay in place, which dramatically reduces the tear down.
Once done with the right seal it will probably out live us all🙂
All the best👍

Hi Glenn, thanks for the reply and advice.

No it’s still not done. The exhaust fell off a week ago and due to other stuff taking priority, I’ve still not had a chance to get it up on the ramps for a look. Investigating the seal is further down the priority list.
Plus it’s a bit out of my comfort zone without someone watching over my shoulder, or me over theirs!

I’ve tried a username search but can’t find ‘seal man’. Don’t suppose you have any contact details?

Cheers,
Nick

Glenn is probably referring to Mark 8. AKA: ThePump man.
However Mark is no longer doing mobile mechanics.

Any Mitsubishi or diesel mechanic familiar with the 4m41 engine found in the more common 3.2 DiD Shogun should be able to fix it for you - the engines are basically the same.

Do you know if he’s still doing them at all and if so, where he’s based?

Cheers Andy. I haven’t found an independent Mitsi garage near me yet and the diesel specialist that’s really close only works on common rail modern stuff.
The exhaust is hanging off at the moment anyway so I’ve that to sort first. 🙄
