Now you've got me thinking, because  iirc, the dolly does not steer in relation to the towed vehicle, so will always want to go in a straight line. Best just put it on a recovery truck!

Stop thinking, your brain will go round in circles and tie you up in unravellable knots.

The dolly is attached to the tow vehicle much the same way as a caravan or trailer and pivots at the tow point.
The front wheels are on the dolly and raised off the ground so do not need to steer.
The rear wheels turn in the same way as a trailers do.

Unless you are using the type of towing frame that V8 rick used, as shown in my photo on page one and the Youtube link, by Boxerbloke on page two, which leaves the wheels on the ground.  Wink

Fostlongstrider: On a two axled trailer (as opposed to close coupled, twin axle), the front axle pivots/steers to follow the tow vehicle, with a rigid A frame tow bar, like a dolly. So if the towed vehicle 'front wheels are fastened securely to the dolly, how does the dolly steer in relation to the towed vehicle? A car's front axle doesn't steer around a single, central pivot to allow this.

I thought we'd agreed that it behaved like a caravan would, and pivots around the tow point?  so its just the two rear wheels following, like any trailer would?  that an A frame differs from a dolly in that respect. where the A frame needs the front wheels to do the steering behind the fixed point of the a frame.

I'm still trying to work out why it couldn't travel backwards on a dolly, providing front wheel lock was on.

Sorry, I'm all out on this. Trailers typically have two wheels on the ground. A vehicle on a dolly makes four wheels being towed on the ground, two vehicle wheels plus two dolly wheels. There has to be articulation between the dolly and the rear wheels.

The Dolly doesn’t have wheels on the ground.Only the towed vehicle wheels.
The Dolly has the front wheels of the vehicle being towed secured to it but raises them off the ground. Have a look at some recovery vehicles and you will see what I mean. There is a mechanism on the Dolly which does this.
On a two axle trailer( not the double wheeled ones) the front wheels pivot and so does the connection to the towing vehicle.
In the Army we towed a generator trailer with a four tonner, the trailer tow bar had an eye which went on the hook of the four tonner and pivoted. The front axle of the trailer pivoted about the axle centre line and the rear axle was fixed.
It was okay going forward and the trailer followed the four tonner much the same as the baggage trailers at an airport follow the tow truck.
But having two pivot points the trailer was very difficult to reverse!.

Found the answer! The plate that the towed vehicle is fastened to has a central pivot and lubrication between it and the  bearing plate which is fixed rigidly to the dolly chassis/or axle. So it DOES articulate like a double axled trailer. I'm sure I had seen dollies with no such articulation/pivot, and couldn't  understand how you turned a corner without massive tyre scrub on the dolly wheels!

Sorry, I just hate not understanding how something actually works. Unless it is electronic, in which case it is just black magic in a box (but not the chocolate kind!) Very Happy

uh!

so I now get where you are coming from, as I was also only thinking of a dolly as something that held the vehicles front wheels, I don't have the image of a double axled dolly, but understand the crossed wires now!

...whats the overlander?
