|
|
Morning, getting organised to swap my cylinder head as it looks like the fitted one is cracked, I have bought one from Pajero Shop as it's a good price, has okay reviews and more importantly will be here the day after tomorrow.
The only thing I am struggling to sort are the washers sealing the injectors to the head: does anyone know where I can get some from, and are they just copper or a composite type of washer?
Any tips or advice for the head swap will be appreciated.
So all I have to do now is get 200 miles home and then start getting dirty again - getting too old for this I think!

I take it you have got the correct thickness of gasket, indicated by the notches in the original and piston protrusion? _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

I hope so! I'll check when I get home and pull the head off,

So the replacement head arrived today finally along with a set of gaskets. The head gasket is a three notch one and the fitted one was a four. Somewhere on the block there is an A,B,C or D stamped which indicates which gasket was fitted originally but I can't find where - can anyone help?
My thoughts are that the van has always been low on power and possibly been fitted with the wrong gasket at some point; the majority of gaskets on sale seen to be three notch ones and it takes a bit more work to find a four, so I am wondering if three is the norm and people are fitting fours just to be safe - I've read this a few times on various forums.
People's thoughts and insight would be much appreciated as I have to be up and running by the end of the weekend.
Cheers

Andy I had the cylinder head on mine done last year.
To be safe I picked up an authentic gasket direct from Mitsubishi, cost about 85quid but didn't want to risk using a much cheaper version from ebay.
Not sure of the thickness of the gasket as I was advised by Mitsubishi it was the correct one.
If you want their phone number just let me know. |

The parts supervisor there is Hinesh, his phone is 020 8200 2200, email is hinesh.patel@hummingbirdmotors.co.uk
And looking through my old emails with him, in them I asked if the 4M40 was the thickest gasket, he replied he has the thickest gasket and would be about 70quid.
Hope this helps. |

Somewhere, there is info on measuring piston projection above the block, so you can get the right thickness of gasket to suit. Lewis or Deker, can you help? _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

Well I took a gamble a few weeks ago as I urgently need the van on the road again. I spoke to a number of guys who swap these heads and also Mitsubishi in Brighton about the gasket thickness and was told the following:-
From Mitsubishi - the gasket thickness is purely to clear the piston projection, nothing to do with compression ratios
From the head exchange specialists - they all use three notch gaskets and don't take any notice of what was previously fitted, they told me they didn't have any problems doing that.
I had a four notch fitted and the block was also stamped 4 but went with the three notch gasket I had been sent; after torquing it up, I measured the piston to head clearance for peace of mind and it was just under 1mm which I was happy with.
The engine started first time, didn't have the knocking sound from the fuel pump timing being slightly out and has now done over a thousand miles with no issues.🤞
