Hi everyone - have a 2002 Space Gear Delica 3ltr -

OD MODE ON - gears are slipping at 30mph and again circa 60mph

When OD MODE OFF - seems mostly fine (perhaps a slight over rev before selecting one gear)

Any ideas??

Having recently had some chassis welding done at the garage front passenger side.... I picked my car up from the garage and it has been a fault since.

Garage said they didn't do anything to or near the transmission - yet it happened right away driving from garage

Why might it slip on OD mode but not on OD MODE OFF? (there is an over rev by 1500rpm)

Garage recommends changing transmission fluid and filter .. but a different mechanic said it sounds like transmission box if it doesn't slip in OD OFF but hes not sure

Any ideas fellas?

It is potentially a worry, if the O/D clutch is slipping, which it may be on the higher gear change, but not the lower. What colour is the trans fluid? It should be a clear, pink-red colour. If it is a deeper, more opaque red, it needs to be changed. If the solenoid(s) which effect the gear changes are under-powered or inefficient for whatever reason, the result may be less-than 'clean' gear changes. If you accelerate up to 55mph in 3rd, and then flick the O/D switch to ON, does it change successfully into O/D? If you then back off the throttle slightly, does it then lock into O/D (as it should) for cruising, or do the revs rise disproportionately when you accelerate fairly gently? (ie slipping, but not kicking down). If so, you might be wise to avoid using O/D as far as possible until you resolve the issue.

I suggest you contact an auto- box specialist, or alternatively DSP Mechanics at Brierly Hill, West Midlands. Darryl and his crew are Mitsubishi 4x4 specialists, having at least one L400 Delica and two Pajeros between them, and have a very good reputation for good work at fair rates. Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

I’m not sure on the petrol engined auto’s, but check if there is a throttle position sensor (TPS) and check the adjustment.

As Andy mentioned, check the state of the ATF; if contaminated it will affect gear changing considerably.

any ideas what transmission fluid my Deli might require?

Even the local Jap Parts shop Can't find it on their spec sheets...

It's a 2002 Jap import (so no manual in English) Space Gear Delica 3L automatic

ABSOLUTE LEGEND. - THANKS LEWIS -

I have requested the manual zip from the Google docs page..

Fluid:
The Jap parts shop called me back and suggested it was:

Suppose to be: Dexrom 3H
But that a: MV ATF PLUS

What do you make of that? I can see it on that link .. ?

also - if you were to add the word transmission to that forum page, would we be able to find it easier on searching?

- You've saved me / helped so many times -

Cheers so much - ace forum!

Dexrom 3H is a cockup spelling of Dexron type 3 - the third generation of Dexron (Which is also used in the steering rack). Type is is the updated version, but the transmission in the Deli is still the first version.

MCV ATF Plus is the same thing by a different supplier.

Pertsonally I use Dexron II, which I have used for years with no problems. However I change mine more frequently than most, to ensure it is in good nick.  Wink

cheers, top dog

you reckon that MCV ATF Plus - will do the job then? (despite what you said about transmission in Deli being first version?)

(I'm not the most confident and a bit new to this transmission stuff)

Cheers bud (..and for replying so quickly)
