Hi guys

I'm reaching the stage of my campervan conversion to locate the leisure battery and have built an enclosure between the two front seats. I've been told that I can't use a leisure battery without good ventilation so its not advisable to put it in the living area of the van. Looking on you tube etc on general camper van builds nothing is said about this and more often than not the battery located in a cupboard or somewhere similar so I'm a bit confused of what to do. †I've seen sites of caravan builds attaching a tube to the vent hole from an AGM battery to a hole in the floor which I can but it would be interesting to hear from members about how they have done it whilst keeping safe

Thanks
Jon

I have a 110a/h lead/acid (basic) leisure battery  in my Delica, un-enclosed and unvented, sitting just in front of the rear wheel-arch. It runs my night heater, cool-box and a set of leds. never had a gas problem. It charges off either the alternator or solar panel or both.

I, myself was worried on this aspect, so made a severely sealed box from an old electrical enclosure box, and vented it by means of a flexible pipe, and shiny chrome boat vent type thing.

As I normally say on here, give me a couple of days and I'll put a picky on!

I always try and future proof, as I don't know when I'll need to source another battery quickly, or what type it will be.

I'm probably ott, but prepare for the worst, plan for the best and all that. ☺

Mine are in a plastic storage box, at the Tailgate end, and have been for years, with no problems.

Modern leisure batteries are sealed, so there is no gas issue to worry about.

The large holes are there to allow airflow/ ventilation for the inverter, should it get hot, which so far it has never done.  Very Happy

Thanks guys for the guidance which is reassuring. The guy who told me I couldn't use the battery was from a battery supplier on eBay so I'm guessing he's being cautious

Thanks

Mine is in a box behind the driverís seat and is charged by the alternator when engine on or solar panel when on site.
Have had it there over three years with no problems.
It is a 100aH leisure battery and is not ventilated.
I can understand having ventilation with the old Lead acid batteries but the new generation donít gas anywhere near as much.
I have never detected any fumes from my set-up.
