I have a1994 L400 3L V6 and noticed while I was working with the side door open the red lights in the door cards remained lit even with the courtesy lights switched off.  Is there a way of stopping these lights from going on when the side door is open as I'm intending to use the van as a campervan so the side door will probably be opened for hours at a time. I've tried looking for a switch on the B post but failed. Ang thoughts?

Cheers

Jon

Not sure how the side door switch works, but you could fit switches into the pos+ wire on each door red light.

Alternatively, you could replace standard bulbs with LEDs, so even if you leave your door open for hours, it has minimal effect on your battery.

Thanks Andy. That might be a suitable option

This doesn’t happen on an L300, door red lights only work from the door switches.
The side door does not actuate them.

On my S2 L400, both the interior and the door panel light activate via the plunger switch at the base of the door pillar and only the interior then can be independently switch via the light unit buttons.
The side door only only activates the sidestep light and rear interiors, again via a plunger switch at the back of the door opening.

As Andy said, LED's make a great alternative to the original bulbs. You can buy ready made LED bulb replacements on ebay for pennies. I may still have some kicking around from when I swapped all mine out.

The courtesy light switch is in the side of the door frame.

You have four options.

1. Use some Gaffer tape to hold them in. Confused
2. Fit a switch into the door. Cool
3. Replace the standard light fitting with one that has a switch built in. Shocked
4. The easiest method and the one I opted for - remove the bulbs and put them in the ashtray.  Laughing

At the rear of the frame - Open the side door fully to locate the switch.

Also, there is a filament bulb in the dashboard showing that a door is open  (I have not checked the wattage of that bulb)
Making three lights, showing a door is open. Using LED's in the door card is a must. (I've only converted one of mine  Sad )

Tho, I have converted the three ceiling lights to LED.

I did that, but left the bulb rattling around in the light fitting casing so I'd know where it was ;-)

But then you've got no red warning lights on your front doors when you open them!  Shocked

By the time the red light comes on the door is already open, so pointless having them.

The only red light I need is the one on the dash, so I know a door is not properly fastened before I drive off.

People should take care to check nothing is going to hit their door before they open them.

People should also take care that they are not going to run into your open door, but it happens! The more visible it is ( especially in the dark) the less chance of an accident. It might serve them right, but I also don't want to get my door repaired ,or give them the excuse for not seeing it. My red lights come on instantly I open the door a fraction.

Having had one reverse several yards into the front of mine in broad daylight I doubt a light, of any colour, would help.

I did say the LESS chance of an accident! You can't mitigate for EVERY idiot (says the man who reversed into a Volvo XC60 and did £2000 of damage without realising/noticing it!) Beware, their bumpers are made from yoghurt pot plastic! Shocked

PS I noticed the Volvo, just didn't think I 'd hit it, just got close, (too close!) using my dangly tailgate mirror!
