|
|
Selma is in need of a new exhaust, it appears!
The current "ebay special" has rusted away to near-unservicable levels.
Am seriously considering trying to source a stainless steel one. In fact, a side exhaust, like a few on here have, is tempting.
Plenty of custom exhaust places round here and can of course ask, but before I do, does anyone on here know of a place that does L300 exhausts "out of the box", i.e. have done one recently and could just easily repeat the process? I'd be happy ordering remotely and fitting it myself.
I know there's a place in Taiwan (?) that is doing custom ones but last time I checked they are prohibitively expensive, even without the shipping...
Thanks! _________________ 1992 L300 Exceed "Selma" |

Not an exact answer to your question, but, I'm going to a powerflow place this Friday with my nearly new, only 20 year old L400
From having custom stainless made before on other vehicles, its worth doing, if your keeping.
I'll report back if they attempt to rip me off!
I'm guessing twice the price of an ebay or milner.? But peace of mind for a while. _________________ A Little Knowledge is Dangerous and expensive! especially if your me Mending anything!! |

Thanks, yes, I'd heard of Powerflow. Be keen to hear about your experience. Within reason, I'd be happy paying quite a bit more for a stainless one.
One thing I'm unsure of, is whether a side exhaust type solution needs extra hangers fabricating, or whether it's fine with what's there already.
There's a place in Stirling I know does custom exhausts, so I might just ask there. I guess it's always up to whoever you speak to, to be accomodating with older vehicles though, so using somewhere that has done one for the particular make/model would always help. _________________ 1992 L300 Exceed "Selma" |

Thanks PinkPig, I'm sort of using yours for reference
I take it you took the van in with you to explain what you wanted? And is there an extra bracket/hanger involved, just inwards from the sill, or is it just using what was there? Can't quite tell from the photos. _________________ 1992 L300 Exceed "Selma" |

I had a Power Flow SS side exhaust made up for my L400 after reading some not great reviews on the Milners exhaust.
It wasn't much more than paying for the Milners one and having the local garage fit it.
I'm very happy with it, and no issues with this years MOT.

Thanks both! As soon as she's had a wash, I'm going to give a place in Stirling a try. Will report back. _________________ 1992 L300 Exceed "Selma" |

I'm on my second Milner's exhaust. With a bit of welding, managed to get the first one to last seven years. This one has been on two years so far, no problems. Around £50 a time, except this time I needed the downpipe off the turbo too, which was nearly as much again. _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

Thanks, super useful and interesting.
Particularly so as I've just come back from a custom exhausts place in Falkirk. Super nice guy, he had a good look at the van and the photos you linked to earlier.
He basically verbally quoted me around £500-600 at least - that included fabricating at least one new hanger (he wasn't happy with what was there) and included a new flange (essentially he said he didn't want to reuse what was there).
I may try a few other places, but if that's the going rate, sadly that's a tad out of the price range I was hoping!
I have started looking at straight replacements for what's there now, but somewhat concerningly, Milners don't seem to stock any of the pipes any more (!) I haven't phoned them yet though, will do so shortly. The eBay place I got the current one previously now only has ones listed in Poland - they're cheap (60 ish and 50 ish for the middle and back sections), but I'd be hit with hefty shipping plus customs charges, no doubt...
If I can't find any stock anywhere, some form of custom solution may be the only way to go, costly or not! _________________ 1992 L300 Exceed "Selma" |

yep... so just got off the phone with them Milner's don't do either the middle or the end exhausts sections for L300's anymore! _________________ 1992 L300 Exceed "Selma" |

Thank you! Mmh, yeah, so near enough £400, which in this Age of Brexit and Pestilence probably would be about £500 I guess..
There really does appear to be a bit of dearth of options available, at least so my current Googling seems to suggest... so perhaps that place in Falkirk isn't too far off the mark.
Nearest Powerflow to me is quite a drive away (Glenrothes)... _________________ 1992 L300 Exceed "Selma" |

Ha, yep, I was just contemplating pretty much getting the bits together and welding something up myself! It could be an interesting project! Really all I need is a few straight bits, a 90 degree bend (of sorts) and a silencer box, and the welder. Or some clamps and copious amounts of gun gum, bahaha _________________ 1992 L300 Exceed "Selma" |

So my L400 custom side exhaust cost £300 from a Powerflow franchise with a lifetime guarantee back in 2019
http://www.MDOCUK.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=50330
All fitted to the existing hangers, but I'm not sure if it would be the same for an L300 setup. Might be worth shopping around. I know raw materials are going up in price at the moment due to logistic issues.....

hokay, so I may well have bitten off more than I can chew and live to regret this, but I've decided to have a go at cobbling something together myself (out of mild steel obs, don't have the means - or skills - to weld stainless)!
I've ordered the bits and will get the welder out when I get round to it.
Wish me luck, will report back. _________________ 1992 L300 Exceed "Selma" |
