Hi all,

I think I've found my first Delica and am going to view and probably buy next Saturday.

The only thing is that it is fuve hours away and I will be driving it home myself. It obviously has an MOT so 'should' be fit, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for basic tools in case of any mishaps...

I'm either hiring a car (one way only) or a mate will drive so I have some room. I will have a recovery policy in place just in case, but I know from experience the time scales that can be involved with that!

I am thinking a socket set, selection of hose clips, jack, 12v compressor and a handful of spanners/screwdrivers and a tyre plug kit.

As a Delica virgin is there anything glaringly obvious I may need?

It's a 2.8td LWB on an M reg with about 100k miles on it.

Thanks for looking!

You got tools - Good

You cannot be expected to have spare belts - for (fan, alternator, air con) Fan/Alternator belts (two of em) may need tightening.

But if there is a head problem, carry water. Head gasket/cracked head = quite common failures.

Thanks for replying!

I forgot to say I will have water. Several litres go in every car I drive after I didn't tighten a hose after a repair one time and I found out that this may cause a leak...

I'll chance the belts, it's been serviced recently and until I pick it up I don't know what to buy. A spare set will live in the van as and when 🙂

Take at least 1L of 10W40 engine oil, and 1L of Dexron 2 grade or Diaqueen ATF (if it's an auto), and some DOT 4 brake fluid. Check that the standard bottle jack is in the rear pillar compartment, and/or take a 2 tonne jack with you. I always take  a little oil and water in any car I own - buying fluids at a fuel station can be expensive!

Brill, thanks!

It is an auto, so I'll pick some ATF fluid up 🙂
