I have decided to change my timing chain, my tensioner was extended to its limit.
I used a split chain and master link, using the well known method of attaching the new chain to the old one and winding it around.

Now this is not as easy as it looks especially when you’re on your own, it is so easy to jump a gear, drop the chain, drop a split link, or lose grip of either end whilst rotating the crank, its a bit like the children’s trick of patting your head whilst rubbing your stomach and keeping a football juggling on each foot.

So, I made a bracket which fixes to the vac pipe bracket, this holds the chain securely to the cam sprocket.

I then used a length of bungee and cable tied the old chain to it, then attached the other end to a hole in the top right hand side of the open bonnet. This kept the old chain under tension as it was exiting the head.

I also slid a length of tube on to to my 1/2 inch ratchet drive and 22mm socket, this meant I didn’t have to lean  into the engine bay the rotate the crank.

More pictures to follow.........

I did ask my wife for some assistance, but she said, No, just scrap it. Shocked

Chain split.

One end held by bracket and the other under tension by bungee.

This is the sacrificial link I choose to grind off, notice I was hands free to to the task as my chain holding device was in full operation.

This is the chain split.

This is my magnificent piece of engineering- if anyone wants to borrow it PM me and simply pass it around, I won’t be doing this job again.

It even has writing on the plate with an arrow to show which way to go .......genius

See how the precision cutout allows the cam cap clearance, just amazing.

Ah well, onto the next.

PS A the holes in the bracket are there to keep it light, easier to carry.
