Good evening all,  Just tried to start my L400.  After waiting for the heater, I turn the key and nothing happens other than the fan etc stop!!  Battery appears to be fully charged but nothing.  Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do all the dash lights go dim too? Is there not even a click from the starter motor, to tell you the solenoid switch is working?

PS Is it an auto? If so, try taking it out of Park and then put it back in again, it may not quite have enabled the starter function. You could also try N.

Very many thanks for the reply.  

Yes it is auto - I tried moving to N - no change, and back to park - again no change.

The only click is from just behind the dashboard.  The dash lights do not dim.

Dash lights usually dim noticeably as current is drawn to the starter motor. As it appears not to be drawing current, I would start by checking all connections o the starter motor and cleaning them; if your starter was sticking, your dash lights would go very dim when you turned the key. An awkward job, but hopefully you have nice spring weather down there if you have to work outside! Smile

Again very many thanks for the advice.

I had tried to look at the starter motor yesterday but could not get under car to see properly!!  Also the weather here at the moment is bright & sunny days - it's 23C outside, rare for this time of year!  The brightness makes seeing into the darker recesses harder.

So I decided to give the battery another charge but this time using a friends old charger, one that will allow the battery to be overcharged I.E. gassing.  I used to be a submariner so batteries are close to my heart and I dislike the modern chargers that only take the battery up to a fixed voltage.

The long and short of the story is that after fully charging the battery the old girl started first turn.  It surprised me but I guess there's a relay that won't make unless there's enough voltage - I live and learn.

He had one when he was working there, low roof manual, I don't suppose you have seen it about? I'll let him introduce himself. If you want to meet up with more owners, look out for meets advertised in the Events sections here; if your timing is right, you'd be welcome, even if your Deli is in the other hemisphere! Glad you got it sorted without skinned knuckles!

The L300 Andyman lists was mine for eight years when I last worked down there. I retired in 2016 and sold the Delica on to another one of the guys I worked with. Reg was F928E and she was a 1988 model.
I have a 1993 L300 here in UK now which has just passed her MOT( not that you have MOTs down there).
I was never a Falklander despite working there on and off for over 15 years. Would have loved to retire there but don't have the necessary funds.
23 degrees is not that unusual as you are going into your Summer now, I have been sunburnt on more than one occasion down there, usually because of forgetting headgear especially when watching the New Year boat race!!

Good Morning all,

The latest and I hope the last in this saga!!

The non starting problem returned again and no matter what the state of the battery she would not start.  So I found some drawings and applied what little brain power I have left.  I was and engineer officer on nuclear submarines so a car should be within my abilities - maybe!

I remembered my Dad having similar problems with an old Ford Popular when the high power 12v  connection to the starter motor had developed a high resistance  - all he did was to loosen the connection, wiggle it a bit and re tighten it and hey presto everything worked.  So I managed to work my way to the same connection and tried the same treatment - bingo - it worked.  Happiness all round until the following morning when the trouble returned.

So what else had I touched in getting to that connection.  All I could see was the low power connection from the ignition switch to the solenoid so I gave that a wiggle and it started.  On further investigation there was some verdigris on the spade terminal and it's female counter part.  Some cleaning and that seems to have fixed it.

At last we seem to be good to go. Many thanks for the earlier advice and I hope this helps someone.  Happy Christmas all.  JM-B

I was in the RAF and at Mount Pleasant in 2000. Loved FI and would love to go back, especially as the beaches are now clear of mines. I used to go to the beach next to Gypsy Cove to sunbath with the penguins. Great off roading there too

JM-B A little application of grease to those terminals might help with the verdigris. I assume salt air has got to them! Glad you fixed it.
