hi,
having tried the search and FAQ i am left with some questions.

I am currently looking to buy a LWB 2.8 and have one from 1st series and another from 2nd series to look at. I read that 2nd series having 140hp vs 125 of series 1 and that s2 has an EFI, does that mean S1 has a mechanical pump or different EFI?

what are the main differences, where did the S2 mature over S1 and where is S1 superior?

thanks a lot,
peter

S1 is a mechanical pump.

Other changes are basically cosmetic.

See this post for info:- http://www.MDOCUK.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=30196

thanks a lot Lewis, already saw that comparison, but missing on the pump specs.

interesting read!

I really wonder why the load is so low for a seven to nine seater?
quite a limitation for an overlander.

They're both mechanical fuel injection (as opposed to common rail) but the S2 is an electronically controlled mechanical fuel injection pump, it all looks very similar apart from the shape of the injector pump body, some extra engine loom connectors and extra vacuum housings on the inlet manifold.

thanks, understood.
I know this from my Landcruiser, mine has EFI on top of the old pump giving it a bit more fuel efficiency but evryone wants the mechanical pump as it is easier to tweak.
I am not planning on doing anything on the engine, need it to just work reliably.
with the older Toyoto's like mine there are failing ecu's which can really sour up your day. capacitors dtying out etc. anything like that known on the Deli?

I believe very few of the electronic controlled pump versions were imported. Mitsubishi never allowed the computer diagnostics for the Deli to come over here as the vehicle was only a grey import. So if you did get ecu/electronic problems, it was very hard to find anyone who could correct and reset it - one reason why most later imports are the V6 petrol.

But if you have a local Jap tuning garage near you, they will most likely have software that can diagnose JOBD imports. Or you can use the old tried and tested method to flash the dash lights to read out any engine error codes from the ECU.

I was worried when I bought my S2, and I had a problem with my TPS which I was able to diagnose with the dash lights, and tell the garage where to start looking. Now I'm more worried about the the rust that's appeared on the bottom of the sliding door .

How did you 'flash the dash lights' to pick up any error codes csmonkey?

Not a good idea to remove the oil cap with engine running, unless you immediately put your hand over the hole to check for crankcase pressure (ie blow-by). Uncovered, it's a good sign if it spits oil all over! Just makes a mess.

Curious comment Andy. What, within this post, prompted you to say that ?

OP's post, a bit further up, which finished: - "checked engine, opened oil cap and it was like a sperm whale ejecting oil all over".

I missed that, assuming it was a signature line.
