Hi all, I usually park my Deli (3.0 petrol) on the drive which is flat. Last week I parked on the road outside my house which is on a hill and went back to the car after a couple of hours - when i opened the door I noticed a smell of petrol which cleared after a short drive with the windows down. Same happened yesterday too - fuel tank full on both occasions. What would cause this? _________________ 3.0 V6, Auto. 2005 |

Probably hot weather, causing the fuel and air in the tank to expand to the fuel cap.
And/or fuel tank vent system allowing fuel vapor to the atmosphere.
Don't park on a hill (With a full tank)

I've looked at this a few times now and racking my brains.
Is the smell really inside?
Is it immediate when you get in before starting? Or shortly after.?
I'd be thinking, fuel can't leak upwards and inside. Is there a leak in engine bay that's getting through the vents somehow.
All I know is that you must be rich , owning a petrol Deli and having a full tank, twice in a short space of time.
Seriously though, let us know what you find out.
I've had a couple of full tanks and do sometimes park on a steep drive, but never ever smelt any petrol.
All the best. _________________ A Little Knowledge is Dangerous and expensive! especially if your me Mending anything!! |

Had the same smell of petrol when tank is full, during hot weather, expansion, open a full can a petrol quickly in hot weather and see what happens. _________________ 1998 V6 3000 Black and white |

Well thanks for replies. The smell was when it had been stood, parked on a hill - always keep the tank full so that it doesn’t seem to damage my wallet as bad when filling from empty😄. Smell is definitely inside the car - no smell from outside or around the filler cap. Checked fuel filter for leak but it’s bone dry (with engine running). When the car is moving the smell soon disappears. Only happened a couple of times and both were when parked on a hill. _________________ 3.0 V6, Auto. 2005 |

If you have it parked facing down hill, then it may be a leak from around the filler hose.
Check the hose clip is tight. _________________
