Afternoon all,

I have one of those entertaining intermittent electrical faults. On start-up the following don't work:
windows
heater fan
wipers
some dash lights
radio
etc.

If I drive for quarter of a of  mile everything comes back on, but can then go off again without any warning. If I stop, park and switch off, nothing will work gain untll I drive another quarter of a mile. I have removed, checked and replaced evey single fuse in both of the fuse boxes (under driver's dash and air cleaner side of engine bay).
However, today I noticed that the alternator does not seem to be charging - the voltmeter stays at 10v before and after start up and does not move with engine revs. It also does not change when the electrics all come back to life. The alternator is less than four years old.

I seem to remember that there is/are a fuse or fuses actually mounted on the alternator - is this correct? If so, where and how do I get to them?
Any ideas, suggestions or offers to buy the bus will be welcome.

Check your three slow blow 80 amp and 100 amp fuses that are attached to the + on your battery.

If not them, then my money would be on a faulty alternator rectifier, test it with a meter, should be 12.5 volts plus with engine running and glow plugs off.

Is this for L400   Question

There is also a fuse for charging, in the engine bay fuse box. NOT on the Alternator (or shouldn't be)
It is coloured Blue = 100 Amp.

NOTE: These heavy fuses are bolted in place, slacken the bolts, and the fuse/s should pull out.

And oddly, the two bolts on each fuse have different size tools - Best use a 1/4" drive socket set.

If fuses are good - then it appears Alternator is Vor Sprung Duff   Sad

Thanks gents. Cardinal sin, yes L400 SE 2.8TD.
I haven't checked the bolt down fuses - will do.
The odd thing is that everything starts working within 1/4 mile - I've repeated this six times in a row. Then it will go off again randomly, or if I turn the motor off.

I would had thought it's unlikely to be a blown fuse as once it's blown its blown, it won't repair itself 1/4 mile down the road  Shocked

Chances are its a bad connection somewhere but where i don't know?

I was going to post a link to the L400 fuse box translation sticky post I put up a while back, which shows which fuses have multiple functions. Plus the location of all the various fuse boxes and battery looms, etc.

Unfortunately it, along with lots of other posts, has dissapeared ?  Question  Confused

Have you cleaned and checked all connections to the alternator for tightness?

Could be Alternator Brushes - Sticky or Worn.

Nope! that is what I posted about above. I spotted the issue the other day looking for my Post on the Fuses, etc. There were only three posts in the forum.
I notified Simon, who checked, but we don't know why almost everything in there has gone.

NB: Derek I have the individual photos and diagrams I used to create the post, but there was lots of other info in it that is now lost

And the prize goes to .......... Yoza. Nail on the head with the first reply.
The 100amp bolt in fuse showed signs of living up to its name and acheiving fusion temperatures. Amazingly, I had a spare one sitting in my glovebox!
Anyway, thanks again to everyone who offer advice and I do hope the missing posts turn up.

And I thought it was just mine that went missing.  Sad

That is worrying as the forum functions on using  older posts with all the info to hand.

Bloody computers

I only worry about the ones in the tech Faqs, type forum, as those are not self deleting forums.

Some of mine that have dissappeared were ones where photobucket had blocked the images from third party use.
Those images I've already replaced over time, as members noticed them and sent me links.
Unfortunately some of the images had been totally lost, due to having a computer crash at home, with no backups available.
However with the advent of low cost 3TB External drives I have more than one copy of them. It is just the text that is lost, along with bits of info picked up and added over time.
The main issue at the moment is getting the energy together to redo the posts.  Crying or Very sad
