When changing the ATF on a L400 is there a crush washer on the drain/sump plug?
I have read Lewis’s helpful L400 Transmission and Diff oil replacement in the DIY Job section and the process looks relatively simple. I just wanted to make sure I am not missing any parts before I start. |

Just did mine, there wasn't one present. Don't know if that's correct though. |

There you go then, what can't speak can't lie I only managed to get 4.5 litres back in after this one for some reason, so I'll leave it for a couple of hundred miles to mature, and then drop it again and install the shown crush washer above.
I've changed the transmission oil countless times before and for some reason never questioned it, no leaks present at all, but will add one anyway.

I no longer remove the sump plug; preferring an easier method of doing it.
Using this I can get on with draining the ATF cooler, whilst the sump is emptying, with no need to watch for oil leaks onto the ground.

Perfect that’s exactly what I need. Thanks for your help Lewis and Bizmarty. 😊
I like the idea of using a vacuum extractor Lewis. Do you attach it to AFT cooler return pipe and suck everything out from there?
I want to get as much of the old ATF out as possible. When I check it the other day it look like Guinness. |

Nope, Straight down the dipstick tube.
I empty the ATF cooling rad from underneath, by undoing both hoses from that, into an oil drain bucket.
You don't need to wory about the amount in the bottom of the main rad, as there is less than a eggcup' worth in it.
You cannot empty all the ATF out in one go, as some is in the Gear chambers and pipes.
Personally I bypass the cooling rad with a bit of tube joining the hoses, then refill with three litres of fresh and run the engine. Going through all the gear lever positions will help flush most of the old stuff out of those and the two main pipes to the front rad. I then drain that lot and refill to the dipstick markers, take it for a run round the block and recheck the dipstick and refill as required.
