Hi all,
So I replaced my alternator belts yesterday afternoon.
I had a pair of belts which I got in the summer (long road trip spare just in case) and the old belts had started squealing horribly again, so needed to get done.
B***dy h*ll, it really is a pain to get at them isn't it!
I very nearly rounded one of the bolts holding the fan onto the pulley, luckily a fair bit of sweating and swearing helped ease it off.
I am intending to get a new set of bolts for it.
Anyway, all went back together okay and am happy to say that the squealing has indeed been sorted
However, when I ran the engine for testing with all covers etc off, I noticed that the fan started spinning straight away...
I thought this was supposed to be of the type that doesn't start spinning until the engine is hot (it certainly wasn't hot, not even warm, really)
Is this something I should be worrying about?

Thinking about it, given how much help this forum has given me over the years, I may see if I can write up a "how to" on replacing the belts...? _________________ 1992 L300 Exceed "Selma" |

Did you try spinning the fan by hand with the engine stopped? It has a viscous, thermostatic clutch which always has enough drag to turn the fan, but it doesn't fully engage until the engine is very hot. I need to do that belt change, been squealing for a while now. _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

Andy, yes, I did - it spins freely with the engine off but there's quite a bit of "drag" even from cold... _________________ 1992 L300 Exceed "Selma" |

Ah okay!
I guess I just don't quite get it then. I would have thought that lots of drag from cold would mean that it would be spinning faster when cold, rather than slower. Anyway I will stop worrying about it then!
More annoying is that there is a bit of screeching again now when first starting.
I suppose this could just be the P/S belt (which really needs replacing too, by the looks of it, I just didn't have a new one for it when I did the alt belts), or the tension on the new alt belts needs upping a little. _________________ 1992 L300 Exceed "Selma" |

The P/S belt shouldn't screech unless it's a bit loose and you are turning the wheel hard. It wouldn't just squeal on startup, - that has to be the alternator belt. Try another half-turn on the adjuster (having loosened the locknut). Cold mornings are always the worst. _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |
