Hi Bulldozer & all,
interesting topic, I had to drive yesterday 1000km in 3dr gear,
after 4th didn't liked to work.
Are all solenoid valves from the sump to reach  ?
Do you took a picture?

Thanks

You missed the end bit of what was posted.

"Fault found code 41 svcs open"

Fault code 41 = No.1 Solenoid Valve Circuit Stuck open

Possibly dirt ingress, not allowing solenoid to close properly or an electrical fault, not allowing it to close at all.

Valve needs checking and cleaning, as required, or replacing.

HTH

Hi Lewis,

what do you use for reading the faulty codes ?

And
did you checked the solenoid valves from the swamp also ?  Is the one for the 4th gear reachable?

Many thanks & cheers

Hi Sanddiver, When O/D (4th gear) doesn't work, it is quite often caused by a poor signal to the ECU from the temp. sender in the cylinder head. The idea is to prevent the vehicle going into O/D until the engine has reached working temperature. This can be caused by a faulty sender, air lock/lack of coolant at the sender, or a poor connection. I believe you can check by detaching the connector and earthing it. The O/D switch on the stalk is also weak, is the O/D indicator light on the dash working? I am not a L400 owner, so hopefully one will confirm or correct what I say, and offer other possibilities.

I didn't read any codes, or need to check any solenoid valves.  I was quoting what Bulldozer had written, in my reply to a question by Deker, about what SVCS was.

Hi andyman,
thanks - I tryed it already, no success.

And with ~300tKm, I got told, the gearbox could need a proper maintenance.
Therefore I was asking about the solinoid valves.

all, what is your milage & when had you to do a gearbox reconditioning?

Thanks

A full gearbox recondition is unlikely.
My last L400 had over 448,000 Km's on it and only required a new timing chain, and the  injector pump seal replacing.  Very Happy

Plus of course a normal service and oil's changed.

Now I'm sure you done this, but it might just help. Quite a few years ago I towed a trailer with dodgy electrics and it blew a fuse in the under dash fusebox. Until I found and replaced the blown fuse, the car would not select 1st gear. And sorry, I can't remember which one!

That would have been the overdrive control relay, which is marked as (ELC-4) in the photo below:-

Thanks for the new idea.
I thought also that the relay or other connection could be broken, but it started under normal conditions
driving just on the highway north to danmark.
The 1st time it happens was just ~800km after the last AT-oil-change, so I checked Oil level & connections.
Then it worked for a while.
After it got worse ....but i was okay, bc we just drove on gravel, so no 4th gear needed (but also in reduction noticeable!)
As my friend had to stopp at a garage for welding, I ask the mechanic & we changed the AT-oil at my Delica again.
Then it worked a while, mostly for 30km.....then it happend that I could drive for 200kms & the 4th was lost.
I noticed, that the power request for the overdrive was not always given.
And after 5000km back on highway, I could drive for 120km in 4th gear and the last 1000 just 3rd ;(
Therfore I was then sharp-eared as you guy's talked about the soleniod valve.
I would be keen to see an picture or a drawing of the solenoid valve position at the swamp!
My
workshop manuals containing unfortunatly at chapter 23 just the informatoions of 4G63+64
and the 23A just 4G63+64+4D56+6G72 ;-(
If one could send me the details of the 4M40 I would be very happy!

Thanks again & a good weekend,
Falk

All the workshop manuals are available via the post by Terramonkey, stored on his Google drive account, in the Tech Faqs section:-

http://www.MDOCUK.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=38831

This link is to the 4M40 engine manual:-

Thanks Lewis.

Just a question,
@ "Chassis_23" itself, the 4M40 is not explained .... so the 4G64 has the same sketches as 4M40?

The overdrive relay @ position [E] ->23-13 I couldn't find, even left or right side ;-(

So is there a separat manual-23 for the 4M40 somethere ?

Thanks again

It isn't.

You asked for the 4M40 Engine information, which is what I gave. i.e. the 11A Manual.

You already have the transmission info, which is in the 23 and 23A manuals.

Check the plate on the side of the gearbox to see which transmission version you have fitted.

Okay, yes sorry was not very clear defined from my side.

I was looking for the sketches from the V4AW3 transmission, in the workshop manuals @23 just 4G63+4G64 a R4A2-5 transmission & @23A...okay
!! 23B @page 135 is the V4AW3 starting :-D

Sorry, I saw just the 23A in the beginning.

That helps. Thanks again.

@Bulldozer, did you took a pic from your broken solenoid valve?

Hi guy's, - short status -
was on a shopping+test ride yesterday,
and checked the code output on the MUT II  for
Diagnostic error codes - just the 11 appears.....the usual one ;-)

Thanks Lewis for: http://www.MDOCUK.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=46381
the great explanation Idea

But I found also a small hole at the upper radiator hose,
for these short ride 1st-to 4th gear were working fine......

I will do more shopping+test rides the next weeks, these are not forbidden in Germany - just no contact to people is the rule!

cheers & take care
Falk

Thanks for the link to TPS   Very good post

Hi guys,

after a while, I was testing more.
Yesterday, on my morning highway tour the 4th gear was working shortly.

As I checked the TPS yesterday later, i realised 1,44V is far away from ~0,85V
and with these lowest possible voltage, she is driving smoother,
but the OD is not working again. -> do I have a broken TPS/an offset from ~0,5V??

What I have to mention also, as I asked the Gearbox Service for help before he told me also that I probably burned my gearbox, with using the 2nd gear as engine break regularly  Rolling Eyes

So somehow I guess I killed the 4th gear/OD  with that!

Or other ideas ? Thanks! Thanks Lewis also for the nice TPS post!
