|
|
My L400 TD loses some coolant over a few days. If I top off the expansion bottle to the max indicator, after four days of use the bottle will appear empty. The car still cools perfectly well, no overheating and takes the same amount of time to reach operating temp.
I can't see any sign of a leak from the expansion bottle itself. The heater still works.
Has anyone got a suggestions for the best places to start looking for the leak? |

Define how great a volume is 'Some.'
Note that if the pressure in the system exceeds that of the cap on the expansion bottle then the built in relief valve will open and coolant, in the form of steam, will pass down the pipe attached to it, which you will not notice.

'Some' appears to be the contents of the expansion tank plus maybe another 10%. As noted, there is no evidence of overheating, so I would not expect any excess pressure or there to be any loss through the relief valve. |

Okay.
My first place to check would be the mild steel Coolant connection pipe to the Engine block.
It's located at the back end, on the passenger side, and has a 'Y' shape. It is prone to developing micro holes.
It's fiddly to get at, rrequiring the intercooler and battery / batteries to be removed for access. At the same time the hoses around it may also develop leaks from the connections, which have plastic pipe connectors.
You can see it easier in this image, just to the right of the core plug and below No.4 Fuel Injector.
The metal coolant pipe running around the back of the block is what feeds coolant to the turbo charger.

second what lewis said
also the pipes under the car for the rear matrix can go with pinhole leaks, i was losing coolant for months, only found mine using UV dye and lamp. |

If this isn't the case then try the water pump, see if there's any signs of a leak under it, or from it down _________________ 2nd gear low and go go go!

I chased a small coolant leak around for months in my S2, couldn’t find any signs of leak anywhere. Was starting to get worried that it was a head gasket, but it turned out to be a faulty cap on the reservoir. I didn’t even consider this at the start because I replaced the cap an reservoir when I first got the Deli. But after changing the cap, no more missing coolant |
