I have fitted 29 mm spacers on paj 2, 15 inch wheels and have Kumho 31 inch tyres on , i have had to bash out the wheel arches and trim plastic etc , thought i had done enough , but here is a pic of the van nose down a slope , still hitting wheel arch ...Sad

Any photos of how much bashing of wheel arches can be done ? i know people have fitted spacers and have moved up to larger tyres ...

You need to chop a 5 inch piece from the base of the arch extender, then beat the inner arch seam flat were the mud flap would be. Lump hammer and lots of effort - not for the faint hearted.

I would also suggest a few more turns on the torsion bars to lift it a touch.

Or alternatively you could just stance it like mine, lots of clearance then.

Indeed, a lot better in the mud. Laughing

This photo should serve as a warning to anyone who ignores a clunking from the front end just hoping it will go away, bottom ball joint failure can be quite an eye opener and bowel opener too.  Shocked

Reminds me of someone else with that problem:-  http://www.MDOCUK.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=48560

also i get a clonk from the front left , especially when i bounce it on the brakes ?  ...it has just gone through an MOt ....but i am aware of extra stress by the mods I've done Smile

There is not a definitive answer to chopping, as it depends on different set ups - Ie: tyre size, torsion bar height etc.

So simply chop it were your tyre fouls on it, there should be accent marks from the tyre to gauge from.

As for the clunking I would suggest further investigation, rather than my method of " leave it as it may go away." Shocked

Your arches don't help Mart if they fasten inside the arch it's tight in there.I flattened the seam and bashed the rear of the arch in at the bottom.
I also cut my front plastics away though Chris Reah fitted 31"'s with no mods his were in the arch mine poke out.

That could also have something to do with how the suspension was prior to him getting the Deli.

You never know what a previous owner has done to alter the Factory standard setup.

Interestingly I have installed the same set of rear coil springs, from the same supplier on two different Deli's, both having the same sized wheels. Yet one is considerably higher than the other.

my truck has always seemed to sit high before i wound up the torsion bars and fitted new springs. i am not sure why my wheels seem to foul so bad?   the new spacers have made it worse, i have cut away some of the wheel arches, they seem to be fine and not so worried about the front plastic although may trim them as make a racket on full lock reversing. its the rear metal part of the wheel arch that bothers me as would shred the tyre. i have bashed the seams over and whacked the wheel arch and all is fine for normal driving, its just when i was parked on a slope i noticed it was hitting again. looks like i need to be bash some more :O

Parked facing down a slope, front suspension will be more compressed, as more weight on it. Compensation by winding up torsion bars may do the trick. Do you get any catching at certain lock angles? With spacers fitted, your wheels will move further backwards and forwards as you turn.

scratch
At the risk of sounding like a dumbo, can you clarify that statement.

If the spacer extends the width of the wheelbase, but has the same central axis of rotaion, how do the spacers make them move further forward and backwards ?

Because if his wheels are 29mm further out, the outer edge of the wheel will be 29 mm further from the vertical axis of rotation, and with the wheels on full lock, they will project 10-15mm further towards the front/rear of the arches.

On full lock.

That will happen with or without spacers! Wink

But moreso with spacers. Also could the clunk be worn wishbone bushes, allowing the whole wishbone to rotate backwards very slightly? It doesn't have to move much at all.

The 265 wide tyres on my non-standard wheels (L300) have stopped catching on the front mudflap bulges at certain lock angles, partly because the mudflaps have worn, and partly because of tyre wear.
