I have just got one of those dashboard cup.coin holders and there is a removable tray , flipped it over and there is a small cog under there, any ideas what its for .. Lewis ???

Yup,
Part of the lid damping mechanism. The lid had has a slightly curve rack that connects with the pinion to make it open smoothly. My lid latch failed so I also removed the lid and use it without as a handy dash tray.
