Been reading the forum about Rear Diff oil replacement, and see a lot of recommendations for HD 80W/140.

Whilst some have said this is an expensive option, it is actually looking really cheap, as I simply can't find anywhere to get the stuff.

Can anyone pop up a link to anywhere that sell this oil?

Thanks.

Do you have an LSD ?

If so they require different oil to a standard diff.

Thanks Yoza, But due to a bit too much rear noise, i'm looking for the 80-140 if anyone has any links for the gear oils they've used???

Thanks in advance.

Noise or not, you need to think about drag and weather temperatures.

The 80/140 is thicker, so you do get a bit more drag on the diff. In summer it won't matter much, and the viscosity will be around the same as the 75/90, so you may still get the noise.

Come winter and the temperature drops a fair bit, it will be more like treacle, which also puts more strain on the diff.  Sad

Thanks Lewis...

As with all things with motors, it seems only the good side of changes get mentioned and we need to wait until someone that has ran the motor for a good while comes along and tells you the down sides.

Guess I'll just go with the HD 80w/90 GL4 then and hope she quietens down with new oil in.

Is there a "best" oil to go for, or are they all pretty much the same?

Thanks again.

Remember your diff takes 1.6 litres but you can not get all the old oil out without using a piece of tube.

There is about 250ml left in the bottom of the diff with the drain plug out, why they put the drain plug higher than the lowest point of the diff is beyond me.

Also while on the subject of -beyond me,- why does diff oil have to smell so bad ? Surprised  Surprised

Reduces the chance of grinding it off, during offroad sessions, on well rutted lanes!  Rolling Eyes

The drain plug is already protected in a recessed shroud so should be fine, the drain plug is infact unfit for purpose and I'm not happy with the shoddy design.

I am about to send a strongly worded Email to Iwasaki Yataro~ Jnr to vent my concerns.

The 'shroud' is also raised from the surface, being a welded on ring of metal, so could also be ground down if it was underneath.  Wink

Just engage 4WD low and park on a suitable slope? Laughing

Also make sure you can get the filler plug out first, otherwise you'll have to park it upside-down to re-fill!

And don't forget to put it on level ground before you refill to the lip of the refill hole, or you won't have enough in.  Wink
