|
|
Hi all,
sorry for the 100000th noise thread but i would like some ideas at what to look for this weekend.
my L400 has developed a constant metallic grinding/crunching noise behind the offside front wheel. i have just checked the brakes and its not that. the noise is happening:
- Driving in a straight line as well as steering left or right
- At any speed, it just gets faster as i speed up
- in 2WD and 4WD
- in any gear and also coasting in 'N'
- does NOT happen in reverse
it has both new driveshafts as previously the C.V joint failed and its not the same noise.
Many thanks for any advice

Something stuck between the brake backplate and the disc? Or resting on the half shaft? Can you jack up that wheel and turn it by hand and produce the noise - easier to diagnose if you are outside the vehicle. _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

That was my first thought and i was really hoping it was but i checked behind the disk and took the pads out too, jacked it up and span the wheel forward and got the noise, span it back and it was silent |

Dan.
I would suspect wheel bearing.
Might be a good thing to take off the hub, check the bearings to be sure.
If you do that, I would suggest removing the brake disc, give it a clean, and re-assemble.
makes it a whole lot easier if you need to replace a disc in the future
I would not drive mine if making a grinding type noise - Without investigating the cause.
