|

I can't see this discussed anywhere before, but might be wrong! Just made a discovery of how water gets into the lower front chassis rails and rots it from the inside, even when vehicle is not being used - I think it's a fairly easy fix (not confirmed yet!). With the front bumper off you can see right into the lower rails (and mine is quite a horror story). I made some rubber flaps to cover the front openings of the rails, to stop water getting in when driving in rain, but found that water still gets into the rails, even when stationary (e.g. in heavy rain). On the top edge of each rail (under the bonnet) there are several unused bolt holes which open into the rail (six on driver's side, a couple on nearside) and also several points where gaps in the metal plates also allow water in. So any rain that comes in at the top edge of the bonnet and gets onto the top of the rail can easily get inside, find its way to the bottom and rot your rails from the inside. I think that I have blocked all of the holes/gaps with bolts and sealant but not tested it again yet (keeping it dry to get the inside waxoyled ASAP!). If this info is useful then I will try and get some photos posted at the weekend |

Well spotted.
I have used a progressive hole cutter and drilled a 25mm hole at the lowest point of my front and rear chsssis rails to let water out. _________________ Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.... |
