Here are some questions concerning manual transmission .
1. I want to switch from 2H to 4H or back to 2H from 4H . do I have to stop the car ?
2. While in 4H when switching from reverse to 1st gear I can hear - feel a noise like two wooden blocks hitting each other. Same noise when I'm shifting from 1st to 2nd gear in low rpm's. Is it normal ?
Thank you in advance for your replies. _________________ Mitsos (my car) is a

Nope you can only do that with the L400 SuperSelect system. With the L300 you have to stop.
Read the explanation of usage by SwizZer on this post:- http://www.MDOCUK.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=29742

If you have Auto Hubs fitted you stop,clutch,2H to 4H,move forward slowly, noise is hubs engaging.
For 4H to2H, stop,clutch,4H to 2H, reverse gear, reverse slowly 2-3 metres, noise is hubs disengaging.

Record it, post a link? Hard to interpret a sound by a description. _________________ 1992 L300 Exceed "Selma" |

Not too loud on Mitsi UK, but on Mitsi FI (RIP) I thought I'd broken something the first time I put her into 4H.
Very loud bang. Got out to check nothing broken!!!
Mitsi UK more of a deep clunk and a bit less coming back to 2H. _________________ Ian.

On my auto, I always put shifter into N before engaging 4H (or 4L). Unless in P or N, there is always some drive/drag from the torque converter through the gears, which can make moving the transfer lever more difficult and clunky. Similarly, when depressing the clutch in gear, you can still get some clutch drag which can have a similar clunky effect. Putting it into neutral first may reduce/eliminate this. _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

Never noticed the difference on the manual box, whether just clutch down or in neutral still clunked.
Auto box I always go to neutral before transfer change. _________________ Ian.

Seems that your suggestion makes things smoother Andy (clutch noise reduced a lot)
although in my case you can still hear the produced sound .
In the following video in the first 26 sec's I'm driving in 2H and then shift to 4H.
You can hear the sound in 0:41 sec , 0:59 sec , 1:13 sec , 1:23 sec and 1:31

Keep in mind that the car is under "re-constuction" so all carpets trims and sound barriers are missing . _________________ Mitsos (my car) is a

I must admit, I really struggled to hear what I think you mean... Had to listen to this several times with headphones in.
I *think* mine does the same but I honestly can't quite remember, I don't often have cause to use 4H (or 4L...). In any case, I must admit it doesn't sound like something I would be overly worried about....?
In answer to when switching from 2H to 4H, I always make sure I'm at a full stop and have the clutch depressed when I do this. I'm not 100% sure but I seem to remember it is safe to change back from 4H to 2H while the vehicle is moving, but I'm pretty sure again I would always have the clutch depressed when you do this. The front hubs would remain locked when doing that though, until you disengage them by reversing a meter or so. _________________ 1992 L300 Exceed "Selma" |
