holla nick.
wow that guy can talk.
you will get a certain amoint of leakage on old pipes, as the turbo impller fins float.
all deisels leak lubricate there turbos, so some oil, not gallons, ends up in the exhaust.
what we do in our workshop is:
1 look for street obscuring smoke out of the exhaust, the more black smoke the closer to death the turbo is.
2 check the oil how much did it use to choke the tech at the back of the van, the more it uses the less time to turbo failure.
3 take off the inlet pipe, thats the pipe the cold air travels through into the turbo, (warning the engine needs to be off for this or you will lose fingers) you will see the intake impeller put your finger on the end and gently wiggle it from top to bottom then left to right you should have a small amount of movment.
will give you some idea.
the td04 is an amazingly tough peice of kit and the chra (middle bit) is available for reasonable money, unfortunatly you need to remove the turbo from the engine to fit the chra.
oh and to answer your question
looks like a very clean Deli turbo |

Put it this way, - many L400 owners fit a catch can to stop oil getting through the breather into the turbo. A little blue smoke on startup is normal (burnt oil)., but should clear once you get moving. Persistent black smoke indicates poor diesel combustion due to lack of turbo pressure (rich mixture). Your turbo looks cleaner than mine, and I reckon mine runs perfectly, - anyway it passed the new MoT emissions test! _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

Thank you guys for your replies ..
@mung is merciless
1. no there is no black smoke at the exhaust .. I can see some black smoke while accelerating fast with the pedal on the floor .
2. sorry but ... I don't understand what you mean
3. there is no play in the turbo impeller .. to be more accurate it's way less than this in the video
@ andyman
It is in my plans to put an oil catch can in the near future ...
the next few days i'm about to receive in my mailbox a new boost gauge that will be installed asap ..
I think that will give me a good indication on turbo's condition .. _________________ Mitsos (my car) is a

That's very clean - just water vapour from combustion. _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

Did you get your leak sorted yet Nik?? My turbo looks the same covered in oil I reckon it's one of the pipes that's leaking... checked for play in the turbo no movement at all and no smoke either... were would be the likeliest place for a leak ? |
