|
|
Hi All,
I've been losing power steering fluid for a while now - it's even draining out when the van is static. I assumed the worst and thought I would need a new rack, but today I got under the van and the rack is nice and dry. It looks like the power steering pump itself is where the fluid is being lost (alternator beneath it is soaked in the stuff!). I can see drips flying off the pulley seal when the engine is running.
So - I'm looking for a replacement but there's just used one on ebay for £100. That seems a lot for something that could be just as worn as mine.Has anyone reconditioned theirs? Either DIY or using a specialist? Nearest I've found to me so far is one in Preston - Preston Power Steering (I'm in Kendall).
Cheers! _________________ 1992 L300 Super Exceed |

Have you checked with the POCUK folks if the 2.5 diesel Pajero/Shogun has the same pump in the same position? Have you removed yours so you can compare it with pictures on-line? Just a thought. _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

Good idea Andy, thanks. If time allows tomorrow I'll whip it off and post it up on POCUK. _________________ 1992 L300 Super Exceed |

Well, I got fed up with adding Wynne's steering pump leak fluid to my van (though it wasn't a bad temporary solution). Also fed up with the oily alternator.
A while back I spotted a used, early (pre-1989) Pajero pump on ebay. It looked very much like the L300 pump. However, when I recently went to fit it to the bracket on the L300, I found the pump mounting points differ slightly. Fortunately, the pump I bought included the mounting bracket from the Pajero. This bracket fits the same mount points on the engine block as the L300 bracket does. It moves the pump slightly further from the engine and so requires a Pajero drive belt too.
So now I have my original L300 bracket and this early Pajero one. Between them that widens my choices for used or reconditioned pumps if I need them in the future. Worth looking out for the same bracket if you're at a breakers or browsing lists of old parts.
I'll post some photos to help identify the bracket later on. _________________ 1992 L300 Super Exceed |

Useful to know that, Tim. I had to remove the steering pump from the L200 I got my replacement alternator off. It was a real knuckle-ripper, everything getting in the way of everything else. Then I had to put it back together so the scrap - man could export the engine as "complete". I had to work on it in the vehicle -very tight. He only told me afterwards, he was going to remove the engine and gearbox the next day! _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |
