Hi I made the stupid decision to monitor my MPG 2.8 TD used mostly very short distances and left running to warm up in the recent frosty mornings with Kumho KL71's on 160Kms for 34 litres of diesel with my maths works out just over 13 to gallon car has been mot'd recently? |

4.456 litres = 1 UK Gallon
(160÷34) x 4.456 = 17.985 Mpg.
It's the crap UK fuel, which I don't think is as good as what they supply in Europe.
I was getting an average of 30 Mpg whilst driving in Spain and France and then dropped down to 22'ish after getting back and filling up at Sainsbury's. _________________

Sorry Lewis
I think I have to agree with delart.
Using only two decimal places, I arrive at 13.6 MPG

Dunno it was got off the internet.
When I did it with a calculator I got 160 divided by 34 = 4.705. 4.705 x 4.456 = 20.965, which is even higher. _________________

It's 160 KMs, not miles listed in the initial post

Ah, spotted what is wrong with the Excel spreadsheet. There was a column missing.
The 20.965 I got with the calculator needs dividing by 1.6 (Km to a Mile) to give 13.103. :D _________________

13mpg in this weather with short runs and warm ups could well be right
You need to get some averages over some time.
My diesel did 22 average on a longer run and it was looked after, oil regular, air filters etc. Timing chain.
Lots of variables, tyres, wheel size, are brakes not sticking a bit.? The way you drive? Load?
I've heard of lots of big Mileage claims but they are heavy and old _________________ A Little Knowledge is Dangerous and expensive! especially if your me Mending anything!! |

The bigger your wheels/tyres are, the further you travel in a recorded mile or km. So you will get fewer recorded mpg for the same actual distance travelled. _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

I get 22-23 mpg running around and 27-28 mpg on a long run cruising at 60 mph.
I use the more accurate 4.54 litres to the gallon which I get from all my conversion tables!!
Not really worth going to 3 decimal places.
Rough guide is 4.5 litres to the gallon. _________________ Ian.

Personally, I don't think you will see any massive change at all.
Perhaps if you did 50k miles a year you might notice something, but short journeys are not their strongpoint.

I understand your concern for economy. I use mine most in the summer, and for load shifting and bad weather occasionally in the winter. With diesel prices rising, you could try running a few litres of cooking oil through it, but with cold weather coming, keep it to max 25 - 33% of your tank, and add 1litre of petrol for every 20L of cooking oil, preferably pre-mixed to reduce the chance of the cooking oil waxing if the temperature drops below 2C. 20L of cooking oil, even at £1.10/L, is going to save you £5 on 20L diesel equivalent. _________________ Andy C L300 Super Exceed - over 100 smiles per gallon! |

Been monitoring my new 3.0L V6 petrol for a while now and concur with Lewis - Sainsbury's fuel is crap ;)
I'm getting 17 (city) -20 (mix with motorway) mpg with their fuel but if I put some nice 97 octane stuff in it I can get 27-28mpg on the motorway. You pays your money and all that........ _________________ I'm a Delica newbie - please bear with me ;) |

Yep. 15-20 sounds about right for a V6 driven gently in RWD. If you put the 4WD on and drive it like a rally car then it's more like 10-15.
I find I can save a lot of money by driving at 50-60 rather than 80. |
