I have been buying the Blue Print oil filters and notice they have a nut on the bottom.

I was wondering if this is used to tighten the filter in place - which seems over kill to me.

Or can i undo the bolt and drain the filter of the large amount of oil it contains and save on the mess which undoing the full filter causes.

The bolt is for draining oil out of the filter.
